What's the scoop? No clue where to start looking. Some people say shop at mom and pop type jewelers, others swear by Genesis, Shane Co., etc. The only consistent advice I hear is to stay from mall retailers. (Probably wouldn't have ventured that route anyway)

She can be so unbelievably picky, and I want her to have something she loves and will be proud to show off. I'm thinking of doing the whole proposal thing, but taking her shopping for the ring. We've been dating for 5+ years... not much mystery left. That said; if I pick it out myself, I'll know in under 5 seconds from her facial expressions what she really thinks.

Can't decide if this plan is "unromantic" though. I'm honestly more concerned about getting her a piece of jewelry she'll actually love wearing.

I took the wife and let her pick it out.
I think that was a wise decision.

I bought my wife a 1 ct platinum 5 years ago dropped 10 k on it. Two weeks ago she decided she wants something different because she did not pick it out. When i still had the 30 day money back would have been the time to say something. Regardless tomorrow she gets a 2.2 cushion cut that i have argued with these folks for a week over for 16k. Got to keep moma happy. Op, i can make you a deal.

I'm doing well enough...but not that well. She would kick my white ass for spending that much money on a ring. (At least at this point in our lives)

I think she'd prefer me to sink that money into 2 weeks in Spain.

Thanks though.

Believe me i would rather sink that money into other things also, but she does not complain with what i spend.

I would go to a local jeweler if possible just to keep the money in the community. My wife and I shopped a couple times so I had an idea of what she liked. When it came time though I had my great grandmothers ring and put a new stone in it and sized. Fortunately it was very much in line with her tastes and had family significance.

Congrats BTW.

My fiancée and I spoke about it before hand. It was normally when someone we knew who got engaged - I made a point to ask about the ring and what she thought. We also happened to be walking by Tiffany and we walked in and perused a little bit.

So she knew it was coming - just not when and how. It was still very romantic when it happened. But before you throw down that much money, make sure it's something she wants. Also there's normally an emotional attachment to it, so you want it to be right.

Service from a local shop is normally the best.

As far as price goes, it sounds weird, but Costco sells individual rocks at very good prices, and at all qualities. Example:

Believe it or not, Costco is one of the largest diamond retailers in the world.

Actually just read some reviews on the Costco website for their rings. On this one ring, almost every review said it appraised for double or more what they paid.

Interesting.

I would never have thought.

Another thing...

Cushions are en vogue right now, but a few years down the road they might not be. A classic cut and setting will always look good. And you might avoid Rocky Top's problem.

Not to be that guy, but before you do it you better have no doubt in your mind she will say yes....

Let her pick the ring out. That's what I did last summer then proposed like a month later.
