Social Security benefits are decreased by 6% per year (0.5% per month) if started before the Full Retirement Age. The FRA is age 67 for everybody born in 1960 or later.

The monthly payment increases by 8% per year (0.667% per month) if waiting past the FRA.

Payments stop increasing after age 70. Do not delay starting to receive monthly benefits beyond age 70.

Medicare has a 7 month window to sign up without a penalty. The month that you turn 65, the 3 months before turning 65, through the 3rd month after turning 65. Miss the 65 years plus 3 month deadline and a higher rate penalty follows you for the rest of your life.

Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplemental (aka Medigap) are the two add on programs available through private insurance companies.

Brokers like medicareschool.com and Boomer Benefits will find an appropriate Advantage or Supplemental plan for no charge.
