End of Season's Ranking?

We lose too much talent on both sides of the ball to be ranked top 25 next preseason. I’m thinking 30-40 range.

I agree but unlike the last 10 years this staff was shown it can develop talent. Players making a minimal impact now will step up.

If we win out and things fall our way I can easily see US top 25 after bowls. Preseason I see no reason we wouldn't be ranked preseason in the 20-25 range especially if JG does not transfer. it all really comes down to recruiting class because the preseason guys always drool over that.

We actually lose a lot less this year than we have the past few. Our biggest losses come at WR. Everything else though not great is replaceable because we don't have more than one Major loss at any other position group. If we get Kennedy back honestly I think we are easily a much better team next year. I am more worried about losses in coaches than players. Guys Like Bituli, JJ and Trey won't be able to be replaced easily but their losses can be covered up by development in the overall units.

Can Crouch emerge? Who steps up at guard and do our 2 5 start tackles take the next step? With JG more comfortable in the system can we replace JJ and Callaway's production by spreading the ball around more? Will a pass-catching TE emerge? Does Kennedy get a 6th year? Can To'o'to'o step in Bitulis spot? Who steps up at safety? So many questions and so many candidates to possibly answer them

I guess I’ll be that guy. This is silly to make these predictions at this point. I mean we haven’t even been through winter work outs much less spring camp. If our Oline stays healthy and progresses like most do with really young 5* talent then we can control the line of scrimmage which some realize is the key to success. Our Dline can be very good as well. Now I don’t know where we’ll be ranked and I don’t know how many wins we’ll have NEXT YEAR much less how we’ll finish this season but I take much comfort in realizing no one else here does either. Still makes me chuckle a little bit to see these predictions though. JMO Go Vols!!!

If the D continues improving on its current trajectory and JG shows up for his senior season like he’s finishing this season then I don’t understand why anyone thinks we can’t potentially be competitive with anyone in the SEC. once your competitive, then it only takes a few breaks going your way to get the win. BVS is still alive and well

We can’t be competitive with the top of the conference due to the talent difference, especially with the backups. Next year we play Bama, UGA, UF and Oklahoma. Those 4 teams have backups that would be starters on our team, especially on the defensive line.

Bituli is the captain of our defense and he is graduating. JG has looked like a good QB (against weaker teams) and will probably grad transfer. JJ is the leader on offense and he is graduating along with Calloway.

This really should have been a 9-3 season. People around here want to pretend the GA State loss is in the past and our recruiting rankings is no big deal. Truth is, during the off-season a top recruit was asked why UT was in the mix along with playoff contenders. He told them Pruitt agreed UT looked bad last year, but to hold off on his decision until after the season b/c the Vols would be a 10 win team. GA State and BYU lost us a ton of top recruits.

No one us pretending its in the past, it is in the past. You know that people saying our recruiting rankings are no big deal...mean, right now. Some understand the ranking isn't as important as Pruitt's evaluation of the recruits. There aren't many that are just saying ranking gs are no big deal period.

And just how many top recruits have we in fact lost because of GaSt and BYU?

It would be nice, but teams with 5 losses don't get ranked. Unless of course they are named Florida State or Notre Dame.
Meh, it doesn't matter anyway, we'd have a bunch of posters here saying we didn't deserve it. I hope to beat Vandy, beat whoever we get in the bowl, secure a respectable recruiting class, have killer spring and fall practices and make some noise and shake things up next year!!!!!

My guess 30-40. I think people are going to be disappointed next season. we will basically have the same record next year 7-5 or 8-4. We are not beating GA, FL or Alabubba.

But in 2021 watch out SEC east.

You might be right. But as this year is proof...we could’ve. Bama was a very winnable game and uga lost to sc. Florida had to get lucky to beat Kentucky. To sit here and suggest we have no chance at beating any of the big 3 next year seems crazy. Even though we’ll lose a handful of good players we should be better due to the fact that our players will be in year 3 with Pruitts systems and terminology. But history proves you’re probably right. Tennessee just hasn’t been able to turn the corner.

If we win against Vandy and bowl game somewhere in the lower 30s.....

Next year we should be about 22 to start the season.

As it stands today, all OL and DL return except likely Trey Smith, and Emmit Gooden returns from injury to the DL. The QBs and RBs are all due back. DWA is the only TE/H Back/FB known to be leaving. The Kicker and Punter return. All DBs are due to return except Warrior, and Flowers returns from his injury. Bituli in the middle and Darrel Taylor on the edge must be replaced. We lose a couple of stud Receivers.

That's it except for transfers out and other unknown attrition. Maybe a surprise senior or two who still has eligibility running through the T tomorrow and not returning. Compare that to roster turnover on other Top 40 teams and our personnel situation looks pretty good today. Personally, IDC if we are low ranked. Lotta fun watching UT basketball in 2017-2018 after being preseason picked 13th in SEC.

I think this team plays better as the underdog. They’ll eventually have to learn to live with that target on their backs and the higher expectations. I think we won’t know what we have at WR or MLB until we hit the field next season. We’re just now seeing the kind of player Palmer can be after hearing about how good he is at practice. Crouch, Peterson or whoever else will be paired with To’o To’o has some pretty big shoes to fill.

I agree that this staff is better at developing the talent we have and I’m looking forward to who steps up next year. I just think we’ll have to convince some people that we’re getting it done before we’re given anything. If we end up ranked by the end of next season then I think Pruitt and this staff have earned some major respect and possibly some raises.

Yea, I've been thinking about what you've said several times before about what others said about Florida before season, being overrated and not being in the top 20 mid season.

They played 2 good teams and lost. They played the same East teams that we did, you know, the ones that we beat and now "they all suck" because we beat them?

Maybe they're as good as advertised, maybe they're not. Go ahead a sing their praise if it makes you feel better.

You have confused ranking with quality. What a team is ranked is a fact, does it mean in real life they are that good, or that bad? Maybe, but WHAT they are ranked- is what they are ranked. Just because someone does not like a ranking, or knows far more than those with a vote, means nothing when it comes to the rankings.
