I keep wondering who is going to have the hardest time. The mizzou players are going to have a pretty emotional day. The coach and seniors will be playing their last game in their stadium, and they'll be coming off a huge game for them. They need this win more than we do (in terms of bowl eligibility). And they're playing for their coach right now.

For our guys, how will it affect them knowing they're playing a team who is playing for a coach who is fighting cancer? Does it affect them to think about mizzou not getting the win?

It's easy to say just play football, but I think it's going to be hard for both sides to put emotion to the side. (And I realize I'm female and feelings have no place on the field.)

Its crazy how emotions can make you do things differently.

Remember when Fulmer got fired just before Homecoming?

They don't, but they will.

Let's see...CGP last home game, Seniors last home game, night game at Mizzou. These three emotional factors are worth three TDs.

It's gonna be a tough night for our Vols.

He knew he was gone when he made the stand for the players. Yeah, he's got those young men worked up pretty good. Should be a tough game, no doubt, but I think we come out on top even with all the drama. Much better playing on their field than ours anyway...definitely.
Also glad you're female. Helps me get in touch with my feminine side.

If the Vols continue with the offensive malaise that was present this past weekend, then this could get ugly for us in a hurry. I do not feel that the situation at Missouri concerning their coach will , per se , affect our players. But they do need to shake off this past weeks performance and hunker down on defense. Also, Dobbs needs to get his MOJO back.

OP I think the circumstances are going to give Mizzu and advantage, we are going to have to play a great game to get out of there with a W.

Key will be how well Dobbs can play and if he is still limited due to injury. Without him at near 100% I don't see how we win.

We need to protect the football and get some Special teams breaks.

I don't think we'll be affected much. I'm sure Mizzou will come out jacked up, but im not sure how long something like that lasts when you're not very good.

Football is an emotional game, but in the end it comes down to talent.
Mizzou will be tough, they have a lot to play for, but our team wants this one bad as well.

The team is pissed that they are 3-0 against us. Theres an old boxing quote somewhere. "Everyone has a plan, till they get punched in the mouth".

Vols will be ok mentally as long as we focus on our story, rather than theirs.

Story about a team over-hyped early, then trashed by media and fans alike several times through the season. Coach under fire--not on hot seat, but not getting respect either. Same for several players, and the team as a whole. All this two years removed from a losing season (2-6 in SEC), with a chance to finish 8-4 (5-3).

The turnaround, rough and patchy as it has been, remains our story. We focus on that, we'll be fine. Let Mizzou worry about their story.

Think that's how we gotta approach it.

Mizzou is focused and dedicated to Pinkel, a beloved coach, coaching his last home game. It's SR Night and SR leader Hansbrough is back and racking up yards. Lock has six games under his belt and is starting to show confidence and poise. The Vols have played flat and uninspired for the last two games, they're banged up, and winning the SECE is no longer achievable. It's possible that Mizzou wants it more and will play with more heart.

None of it works in our favor.

I think that's how I have to approach it. I'll be honest, I really feel for that program right now. Probably because of my mom's fight with cancer. I've been trying to figure out how our coaches and players go out there and fight them, knowing what they're going through. But you're right. We have our story too. Thanks 82. :hi:

Personally, I think there is a large measure of psychology that goes into all sports along with athleticism and coaching. Highly motivated teams beat superior teams all the time. A good coach like Pinkel who is obviously very well liked by his players can use the emotion of the circumstances to play not only their best game but a game well beyond what might be expected. I expect Coach Jones to bring out the research on last games of successful football coaches as examples of what has happened in circumstances like these. Very painfully, I remember Tom Osborne's last game. In my opinion, the Vols will have to play with the same intensity as in the Alabama and Kentucky games to win this one.

This is a perfect example of seeing if Butch and Co can earn their paychecks on Saturday-- it is their JOB$ to have these kids mentally and physically focused and ready to pound a mudhole in Mizz or anyone else they play.... no excuses.... we are a better team and I don't care whether we blow them out or win by one.... we better win and this is a winnable game... OK BSiA, let's see what ya got....

If Dobbs is still injured then what ? Is QD getting any reps with the 1st team this week ?

I think Dobbs is banged up but not injured per se. I believe he was told to get out of bounds quickly if he had to run, which he did especially against SC. He didn't run much against NTS. I think coaching staff was limiting his action to help him vs Vandy & MU.

Hope is well this week and thanks for your opinion - it makes more sense than the goobers that trashed him all weekend

I do hope that is the case, and if so, I sure hope he holds nothing back and puts it all out there in this game this week.

Butch preaches to NOT play on emotion. We'll see what works Sat nite. I think if Tenn can avoid a rash of turnovers, they win. If it's a Ala vs Miss type game, all bets are off. Tenn has seemed to be fumbling quite a bit lately.

What makes films about team sports so enjoyable/moving is that concept of playing for a reason bigger than oneself. That's why Friday Night Lights resonated and touched so many viewers......those boys in a downtrodden area rising above their circumstances and others' expectations.

I have wondered what our guys having been playing for the last few games....hope the Missouri game is not one of flat effort. We can respect our opponent and honor that lasting memory (for Mizzou) by providing a high level of collegiate football.

0-3vs. mizzou should be enough motivation for the Vols. :machgun:
