Read this this morning and it literally gave me chills, maybe I'm more sentimental than the next guy, who knows...

Don't mock it: UT's traditions embraced by players GoVolsXtra
We talked about what the traditions mean, the importance of them," Dooley said after the Vols held a mock game Wednesday night at Neyland Stadium.

"(The players) did great. We talked a little bit about a lot of traditions today."

Dooley took his team through the same routine it will go through in just 10 days, including the "Vol Walk" to the stadium and the pregame ritual of reading Gen. Robert Neyland's game maxims.

"(We) sang 'Rocky Top,' had the band come in," Dooley said. "It was awesome. The team loved that.

"Listen, (the players) believe in them (the traditions) now. This place is special. It really is, because of that. A lot of people don't really appreciate how special those things are, but it is.

"I told them I knew about most of these traditions before I even got the job because I grew up watching it. They're going to leave here believing that, too."

Count Matt Simms as one of those believers.

"The maxims were pretty awesome," the junior quarterback said.

"Just sitting there and saying them together as a team and going through why they're important. Even though General Neyland made them up so many years ago they are still relevant for today's game."

Damn right they're still relevant! I supported Kiffin almost completely, but hearing about him not reading the maxims and always talking USC this and USC that, that rubbed me the wrong way. That's just a slap in the face to everyone who helped make UT what it is, and that's one of the best damn football programs in the land. Make no qualms about it, we're down right now, no doubt. But we're still one of the best that there's ever been, and we'll be back soon enough!

I'm what you would call a cautious yet optimistic fan. I don't know if Dooley has the brass that it takes to get us back to the top, no one knows that yet. But what I do know is that he's our head coach, and he'll have my full support until I'm shown that he doesn't deserve it. I'll tell you one thing though, he definitely seems to be doing things the right way, and I like the way things seem to be going. You honor Neyland, his maxims, and what he worked so hard to build, then you're heading in the right direction. Of course it obviously takes more than just that, everyone knows, but it's a cornerstone in building success here.

A little over a week away boys (and girls), GO VOLS!!

I was glad to read this. I think it's an important point to emphasize when there has been so much transition in the program, that there things that are constant and make UT a special place.

BTW, at the bottom of the article... Zach Rogers a starter?

Ha! I just wrote the same thing in the "defensive starters" thread!

 Traditions are a big part of what makes Tennessee great and it is definately nice to have a coach who knows, understands, and indulges in them! A couple more years under CDD along with some good recruiting and we will be back where we belong at the top of the SEC and as a national power! And it can't get here soon enough!!!

I love this!!! Almost started this thread.. I have to admit I never realized how much Kiffin wanted to go away from the Traditions. Thank goodness that Coach Dooley understands and respects what we have loved for so long.

bigorange , I'm so glad you posted That! I'm a die hard Vol fan and With so many negative things being posted about UT it's great to see a real Vol fan. I just like many other love my Vols it doesn't matter what sport I'm UT all the way. I know without a doubt all this negative stuff trickles down to our fan base and it really should stop. Yeah we might be down But I can honestly say there isn't a team we will face this season gona just come in and take anything from us. If you do some homework on our Coach he hates to lose! We will give many teams all they want and then some ...just wait and see!

The maxims were still read. The USC stuff doesn't really bother me. Highlights of Reggie Bush I don't see as offensive, that's just showcasing what the coach can do for recruits. Peyton Manning TDs are fun for Vol fans to watch, but they weren't really relevant to Lane Kiffin or any of his staff. I imagine if they'd stuck around there'd be Eric Berry, Montario Hardesty, Jon Crompton, and Dan Williams highlights in there right now.

Dooley tweeted this morning- (Training camp over, Game 1 focus begins. The team that make the fewest mistakes will win.)

Reading this pumps me up! No it doesn't mean that we automatically win games, but at lest CDD is getting UT back to the foundation of what we are about. Its a good start in the right direction. Makes you proud to be a Tennessee Vol!!

I kindly and humbly disagree with you. Showing another schools highlights while being head coach at an other school is not ethical. Can you imagine Saban showing LSU highlights his first year at Bama!! He would have been run out of town. UT has more highlights than Payton. JMO:peace2:

Showing examples of who he coached is unethical?

I never thought of that, we should probably send Dooley an email and let him know too. :ermm:

You gotta crawl before you walk.

He can embrace all the maxims and traditions as much as he would like. If he doesn't win in the next few years, his arse is gone.

Is it that hard for you to grasp?

It's not unethical, but it's certainly inappropriate.

Says who?

Dude coached some big time talent. like kpt said... If he had stayed there would be video of Berry and others he coached here.

Seriously, why? These were recruits. You act like he was bringing in Doug Adkins and showing him Reggie Bush clips.

Honestly, I think based on the hatred for Kiffin, if Kiffin had showed Manning clips there'd be people complaining he was being unethical for taking credit for Peyton's achievements.
