“I wasn’t there (Tennessee) in the spring, but I certainly felt at the end of last year that we were playing really good football. There’s certainly a lot of weapons returning at Tennessee and if everything goes right, they’ll be in the mix at the end of the year. It comes down to staying healthy, handling adversity, coming up with a big play in a close game, so I certainly think Tennessee will be one of those teams that can potentially win it all this year.”
Tennessee's biggest coaching change will impact defense

"Staying healthy handling adversity and making a big play in a close game"

New insights for sure.

Sort of disagree with the handling adversity thing. The kids played their guts out all year. Reversing bad coaching decisions in big games will be the key. Bad coaching decisions are what brought on the adversity he's talking about.

They played their guts out, but sometimes you have to have your playmakers make a play in crunch time. Was coaching suspect in the losses? Yes. Did the players have a chance to overcome lapses in coaching and win the games? Yes.

When the other team has a series of 4th and longs, make sure you only rush 3 and get in your "prevent" defense...

Luck doesnt exist. There are good plays and bad plays. We just have to make more good ones :)

You don't think the Clint Stoerner (sp?) fumble was luck? Granted, you HAVE to make the big plays but there's generally some luck involved too. The key is to take advantage of those opportunities.

That was not luck, that is what a defensive push delivers in crunch time. His lineman got blown backward so fast that he stepped on the qb's foot. Him trying to use the ball to gain his balance was a boneheaded play. That push would have sealed the gator game last year but we went prevent. I hope Shoop turns the dogs loose this year. Their isn't a qb that can throw from flat on his back or make good decisions when he's dodging bullets constantly.

Clint Stoerner's fumble in 1998 was another great example of the luck needed to win a championship.

If you're gonna go that route, then you need to go through the film of every team through every game that season and see how many "lucky plays" happened to get them where they ended up. Things happen in sports, you make your own luck.
