What if Cutcliffe does actually go to Duke? Just what if?

Would that blow holes in Hamilton's argument that he needed to get Fulmer the raise/extension so that he could secure a great recruiting class and show stability? What good does it do to throw all of this money at this staff if Cut leaves? Wouldn't a coach leaving (or openly admitting that he wants a head coaching position) affect recruiting? Don't you think coaches are whispering to potential players and telling them, "Cutcliffe may not be in Knoxville long..."?

What the difference between Cutcliffe's situation not being certain in the near future and Fulmer's situation (allegedly) not being certain because he didn't get an extra year on his contract?

i dont think Hamilton will take any heat for Cut leaving.
The argument he used for giving Fulmer an extension was to show recruits that there is stability on the staff. Well, if you have a guy like Cutcliffe, who has been publically open about wanting to have a head coaching job, how is that anymore stable? Couldn't other coaches just as easily say to recruits, "Cutcliffe is actively looking for a head coaching job and he will take Matt Luke (or whoever) with him..."

Cutcliffe's active campaign to get a job is just as much (if not more) damaging to recruiting than Fulmer not getting an extra year on his contract.

i agree with that, Ras. are you saying that MH should have already done something to keep Cut?

If you are going to stay consistent with the garbage you threw out there in the e-mail, yes. He should be doing what he can to keep Cutcliffe here. Not that I want Cutcliffe here or not, but it just proves that Hamilton's argument was pure filth.

Obviously he meant stability as far as the head coach. It's a given that assistant coaches are going to come and go from time to time.

Hue Jackson is another possibility. He was with Duke's committee for over 3 hours today. Don't know if this is going to have an impact or not, but Hubbs over at VQ just make a post that stated that Cut was back in Knoxville and is at home talking with his wife about the job. He also seems to think that Roper and Luke go with Cut if he leaves Knoxville.

I don't think he took anyone with him. Just left the offense in the hands of a man who looked like he had crapped on himself all night and didn't want anyone to know.

Still kinda of crappy to do to the team that helped you become a good coach and QB mentor.

There was nothing wrong with what he did or what he is doing now. He was never going to get the opportunity to become the HC at Tennessee... so why be upset at him for moving on to a better lot in life?

I am not wanting to hold him back at all. Let him go coach elsewhere as a HC that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the fact that he didn't finish out the 98 season with class and if he leaves now he will do the same thing even though we aren't in the NC. If Cut does leave he gets to play his way out of the ACC cellar which won't be easy. I just don't like ditching your team when they need you the most.

In other words...

MH is an idiot if he doesn't fire Cut.
MH is an idiot for letting Cut leave.
MH is an idiot for letting Cut stay.

Are you serious? Do you think he just needs to show up at Duke next Spring and start coaching? He has to assemble a coaching staff extremely quickly and hit the recruiting trail.

How were you able to glean from his comment that he was saying Cut would have it easy at Duke?
