Early signing

As long as they can make a buck on it, early signing is here to stay. And ESPN is probably lobby for another one.

The cream of the crop has already signed . The ESP caught us in transition, we did better than expected IMO. It will get better under CJP's guidance.

I would never define transition as the 5h1t storm of a coaching search we had. Had Tennessee hired David Blackburn as AD, the time frame of the hire would have allowed the next hire (possibly Pruitt) to maybe have another week to 10 days to assemble his staff and contact recruits. That could have easily given him enough time to sign another 5 or 6 guys.

Where it gets interesting will be how many guys decide to move on. It could be an eventful spring.

I was not in favor of an early signing period for no other reason than it gave us something to look forward to between bowl season and spring practice. But we got it, and yes we were at a disadvantage not only having a new coach but one hired late.

Now for that early signing period in June or July, suppose Bama signed 3-4 kids because of Pruitt. Pruitt moves on to become head coach at UT, those kids that signed with Bama because of him are now stuck at Bama. It doesn't have to be Pruitt, coaches are hired and fired every year, but who would have thought Fisher wouldn't be at FSU in 19? I know kids are suppose to sign with a school, but surely no one here is naive enough to believe that, they pick a school because of the coaching staff. I think this Dec is good for the kids who are tired of the process, but not so good for schools with newly hired coaches When our coach has been here 3-4 years and Smart and Mullen are fired, we will like the Dec signing period alot better.
anyone following college football and not just UT had a pretty good idea Jimbo was moving at some point soon. There has been smoke for the past 3 years. Just not the right job/buyout sweetspot came open.

If they were gonna do early signing this is the right time period for it. Reward consistency and competence and punish morons. Every AD in the country knew the early signing period was coming long ago.. if they didn't realize the importance of it in hirings and firings that's on them.

IMO the early signing period for football is a double edged sword. It will help parity and put the onus on good scouting. This means teams in talent rich states will tend to lose less of their diamonds in the rough that blow up late. But it will also put teams with bigger recruiting budgets at a bigger advantage.

Tennessee just offered Hank Backmeier a shot to play for UT. He's from the 2019 class, 4 star QB, 6 ft 3, 185 lbs. Rates #2 as a ProStyle QB. Hope this works out.
GO VOLS

Somebody post this, I can't yet start a new thread. Thnx :hi:
