How many of you would like an early signing period? IMO, i would love for the NCAA to implement an early signing period, maybe Jan. 1st or 2nd? I also think the NCAA should make these high school players sign on Feb. 4th & not allow them to still be choosing or taking visits afterwards?

Why? Well one reason is if you have an early signing period it will allow coaches to see how many scholarships they will have heading down the stretch for NSD on Feb. 4th., it would also stop alot of kids switching at the last moments & causing alot of controversy. Secondly, with the bad economic times we are having right now it would save some money for these Universitys, How? Well If alot of kids signed during the early signing period that would mean those coaches/coach recruiting him wouldnt have to spend the money to fly, get a hotel, rent a car ect. to go see those kids every week or every other week all the way up to NSD ( Feb 4th. ) to make sure that kid is still commited to that school.

My reasoning for making kids sign by or on NSD ( Feb 4th. ) is, as of right now Bryce Brown & David Oku have still not made their decision, so the schools are still wasting precious seconds on them instead of preparing & going hard after next years class while other schools that are out of the running for one of those kids have already shifted their attentoin to next years class & beyond.

I agree to an extent, but it is a double edge sword at the same time. We could lose players too. Just think, JJ could have signed with LSU early and not have changed his mind to come to UT. just my 2cents.

Lane did an interview for the radio this week, where he addressed much of what you brought up. This year the rules helped us, but in the past, the rules hurt us.

When the staff is settled and able to recruit on the same schedule as everyone else, we'll definitely prefer the early signing period. The real victims are the kids with conditional offers who are waiting to find out where the elite athletes go.

That being said, the rules are in place for the kids and not for the fans. The media has made NSD a big deal and too many people are putting selfish interests ahead of the kids' futures. I don't like the rules as they are, but I certainly don't want changes to be made so that grumpy fans can argue about who got the best class 10 days earlier.

maybe Jan. 1st or 2nd?

I think December 1st would be a much better date. no one wants to be making decisions around the holidays. high schools aren't in session on the days you mentioned anyways. you think inner city kids are going to drive to Kinko's on New Year's Day to fax an LOI?

I also think the NCAA should make these high school players sign on Feb. 4th & not allow them to still be choosing or taking visits afterwards?

if a kid has other things going on---basketball, football playoffs, then it's understandable why a kid like Orson Charles couldn't get 5 visits in after the season. a smaller window would make sense, though---early period and then a later period which only lasts 2-7 days. maybe as much as 10-14 days, but two months is too much.

would save some money for these Universitys..

athletic budgets/academic budgets are different. in some cases, revenue trickles down from the ath. dept to the academic budget, but only at schools with big sports programs. keeping CLK off a booster's jet has nothing to do with the computer lab getting extra Mac's.

instead of preparing & going hard after next years class...

that's not really the problem. right now staffs want to concentrate on prepping for spring ball and doing things other than recruiting. they're working on next year's class, but they want to be on campus evaluating film and getting settled for next season.

CLK mentioned that it would save money. That makes no sense; it doesn't matter if the signing day is on Jan. 1st or ground hogs day or what ever kids are still gonna take their free visits and it's gonna cost someone a lot of money.

I think he was speaking specifically about coaches logging sky miles, while they recruit these kids across the country.

if the recruiting calendar is shortened, then there will be less days for coaches to be on the road.

if a kid signs an LOI on December 1st, then Tennessee won't fly out to see him on December 2nd.

less days in the recruiting calendar = less flights = less money spent

I'd like to see an early signing period in December (or just before winter break). This would give the kids who know from day 1 they want to play for X team, no matter what, a chance to sign on. Some kids don't like being hassled. It would also allow the coaches to lock up players and keep them from going elesewhere (teague, jackson, and nuke... Which I know worked in our favor, but that won't always be the case). It would also let the staff focus on other recruits, instead of having to babysit the verbal commitments until Feb 4th.
