An early signing period for college football appears to be gaining momentum, and coaches are expected to vote on the matter this morning at the American Football Coaches Association convention here in Nashville.
The Football Bowls Subdivision head coaches' breakfast and meeting are this morning, with the early signing date among the more significant topics on the docket.
"I think it's something that we'll probably get to at some point," said AFCA President Tyrone Willingham. "If we can fit it into the recruiting calendar and make it work from that standpoint, which I think if you're going with the December signing, it would fit very neatly into the recruiting calendar and it would not be a problem."
Indeed, while a variety of possible early signing dates have been bandied about -- late-August/early-September included -- it is the December date -- likely the third Wednesday of the month -- that appears to hold the most sway. For example, Dec. 18, 2008, could have been an early signing day on the floated proposal of utilizing the third Wednesday of the month.
It's expected coaches will push the early signing measure toward its next step and get it quickly before the NCAA Rules committee in the near future.
