EA Sports Unveils "Season Ticket" For 5 Upcoming Titles

EA Sports is set to unveil a program called Season Ticket, a $25 per year membership that is intended to give gamers certain perks for supporting particular EA Sports games.

Here is what the program covers:

  • Early full-game access to EA Sports games before their release - This is the biggest aspect of the program. Starting with Madden, folks will be able to download the full game on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network a full three days before the actual release of the title. You will be able to play any part of the game, and then on launch day the download will then be locked and you will have to go out and buy the actual game at an actual retail outlet. (If you don't download the game three days before release, you still get three days of access to the full game regardless of when you download it.) So Madden still has a release date of August 30, but you will be able to download and play the game on August 27. All of your game saves, Achievements, Trophies and so forth will transfer to the full game if you choose to buy it on launch day.
  • Discounts on all downloadable content associated with EA Sports titles - Anything that is released in the virtual stores on the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be 20 percent off the regular price if you are a Season Ticket member.
  • Free "premium" web content - This portion of the program is more unclear than any other for now. FIFA 12 has a Creation Center aspect that will be free for users to toy with on EA's website if you choose to join the program, but otherwise it's still a bit fuzzy what will be included in this portion of the program.
  • Membership recognition so others know that you are a Season Ticket user - This is essentially a badge of sorts that other gamers will be able to see on the EA Sports website, as well as within EA Sports games.
The program is set to launch when Madden launches -- or technically before it launches. From there on out, five games will be associated with the Season Ticket initiative for now: Madden, NHL, FIFA, Tiger Woods PGA Tour and NCAA Football. This year's recently released versions of Tiger and NCAA will have no association with the program this year.

Lastly, you have a 12-month membership beginning on the day you decide to purchase Season Ticket. There is only a $25 per year membership fee; you can't simply purchase a $5 membership fee and unlock perks to just one EA Sports game.

This is optional, right? They need to worry about producing better quality games. FIFA is great, but all the others are practically the same every year.

Yeah its optional. I think it is a great idea from EA's standpoint and also from the standpoint of people who want the game a little early. You hear stories of people paying 80-100 bucks for Madden, if they could get it a couple of days early on a friday. I will buy it, just to get Madden early.

They're the only show in town, and mediocrity still sells.

Outside of NHL, they've more or less sold yesterday's bread at fresh baked price without losing sales.

That's why I miss the good ol' days of Sega selling NFL games for like 25 dollars on the release date. It gave EA something to strive for but EA is so lazy and doesn't even give a crap that they decided to undercut everybody by giving EA more money to have the only NFL license. Now, they can produce flawed garbage and not have to worry about anyone stealing sales. The only other option is playing with the Dallas Dragons or Northeast Tennessee Turtles. No thanks...

The technology cost and not to mention the economy was drastically different back then, but I do miss the Genesis....one of my favorite consoles.

Yeah but everyone else was still selling games 50 or 60 bucks on the release date. Sega might not sell it for 25 dollars anymore but maybe 40 or 45. Even if they sold it at 60 some people would still buy it over EA(maybe not a lot, but some). I just thought it was better when EA was competing against other companies. Especially ones who were selling stuff cheaper just to compete. I like the new NCAA game but at the same time, there are a fair amount of flaws in it as well as EA servers having problems. I think they'd do a better job of fixing some of these kinks if they didn't have a monopoly.

When does EA sports agreement with the nfl end? I am ready for 2k sports to make some more football games. More competition

Kind of surprised they didn't try and sell dedicated servers under this seeing how ****ty they have been so far.

Not exactly sure, but I have no doubt that it will be extended. The NFL is happy with it and enjoying the benefits.

I was talking about for XBox and PS2(I think they did). Sega stopped making systems and just started making games(mostly sport). They made NFL, NBA, MLB and both NCCA football/basketball I believe. They might have made a college baseball game once too. But they were selling games for 25-30 bucks on the release date for Xbox and PS2 while every other game was sold double the price on the release date for those systems. They weren't bad either.

What? I must have been paying discount prices then, because I dont remember paying more than 39.99 for genesis and nintendo games back in the day. Maybe my mind and memory are starting to go.

Ok, gotcha. I never noticed a price difference between games depending on companies other than 2K with some of the baseball games in the early 2000's

In 2004, Sega merged with Sammy Studios, but co-published Visual Concepts' line of sports games with Take 2 Interactive (under the Global Star value label). In an effort to increase the games' public standing as viable alternatives to the perennially best-selling EA Sports releases, the Visual Concepts games released in 2004 were re-titled to include the old "2K" branding, and they carried a manufacturer's suggested retail price of 20 dollars -- less than half of the standard 50 dollars charged for their EA Sports counterparts. While the Visual Concepts games still sold far fewer copies than their competition in 2004, sales figures suggest that even long-time EA Sports fans took notice of this aggressive marketing strategy.

EA appeared to take notice as well. Traditionally, football games are the biggest selling of all sports titles, and in the end of December 2004, EA announced that it had secured exclusive rights to publish games based on the NFL and its Players, Inc. union through 2010. A few weeks later, EA announced it had also bought exclusive rights to the ESPN license, through 2020.

2K Sports(Sega) was making a strong push to compete and EA obviously didn't like that so they just eliminated the competition. Smart on their part but we lost out as fans since it allows EA to coast. Not that EA's games are bad, just that they don't seem to give a crap if there are flaws.

BearCat, I see your all about some Madden. I have not bought it since 09, should I buy it this year? I have been thinking about it. Just do not want to get it and it be as flawed as NCAA.

So the game previews are included in the price of the season ticket, right? They're not gonna charge extra for you to do that?

Yeah, your mind is going. The retail for new release games has been more or less stable since the 80's
