Hadn't heard Hansbough's comment. To me, this shows that the administration was completely unprepared, wasn't able to gain the interest of top coaches, and was forced to settle. It's a horrible look.

I agree there, it seems like a panic hire. It might have looked different had your choices not come out and said thanks but no thanks just yesterday.

We’ll have to see what happens. Program wasn’t growing under Hubert so that’s now irrelevant. Could have made any number of worse decisions for head coach. He’s starting off behind the 🎱 so first test is to see who he can keep at UNC. I’ll be interested to see the make up of his staff.

1. 2001 vs LSU in Atlanta
1a. 1999 Duke vs UConn in that POS stadium in Tampa

I will not voluntarily watch any clips from either of those games

A lot of folks are going to be eating crow on this hire IMO. Malone is a super X's & O's coach, and a defensive guru. If UNC can get the players, this will be very successful. CBB is not what it was even 5 years ago. Now you just need money to get the horses, and a coach that knows the game.

Those deep recruiting networks as an assistant coach a quarter century ago are about to pay off bigtime.

It’s close for sure. I would lean toward the ‘99 team given how dominant they were. Lost to Cincy early in the year in the AK Shootout. Didn’t lose again until the NC game. They absolutely demolished their opponents. Had 5 games all year that were single digit games. Beat UNC by 21, 20, and 33.

His connections to the European and foreign markets will though. Like I say, I will be happy to revisit this down the road. A lot of folks may be hiding if it works out.

Totally agree. Outside of Lloyd or May, this is the best coach they could have gotten, IMO. Malone is the kind of coach who demands respect and effort in the same way Saban did on the field. They're able to compete with anyone in NIL and he'll have the benefit of telling players he understands the NBA better than anyone else and can prepare them to play there better than anyone else. Plus the ability to bring in top European talent will be huge.

It'll be really interesting to see who is on his staff. I saw the report of Calapari's Recruiting guy which would be a great start. I'm sure he'll have a couple of "family" guys like Stackhouse or even Sean May (who was on the last staff) to keep the Carolina culture that's so important to them. I'll be very, very surprised if this isn't a big win for them.

I'm not writing this off as a bad hire. The other hire was probably going to be Donavan based on what Physcho T had to say,and he hasn't coached college basketball in over 10 years and the game has changed a lot.

I would have taken him as well,but they likely couldn't wait on him for a decision. His success in the NBA could work into the college game. The portal could work into his favor.

I'm going to wait and see next year,and go from there.

I’m lost as to why so many already are writing this off. Only Carolina fans would cry about hiring a coach with an nba ring from just three years ago

Given the circumstances and alternatives, I’m happy. No guarantees of course, but I think he can and will do well.

Michigan and Zona are as close as you can get without actually being a blue blood. Carolina fans are so arrogant they still expected to pull one of those head coaches.

Donovan probably would’ve been a bigger splash, but Chicago jumped quick to make sure he stays

You can point to a lot more reasons why this won’t work than why it will.

I don’t know one Duke fan that this hire scares. Not one. Cunningham put all his money on 2 targets got neither and had to scramble to hire someone.

Now the AD has two coaches who won’t win many games and will be in another search within 5 years in both sports.

Never been anything at this level in college basketball that I can find or any level.

Never dealt with NIL

Never recruited at any level

You can say all you want that Carolina fans cry but had Duke fumbled this badly they’d too would be whining.

Honestly, in 2022 I would probably rather have handed the keys to Duke's program to someone like Malone than to an assistant with no HC experience like Scheyer. Shows what I know though
