Duke vs UNC The 2026 Thread (Tobacco Road is Back)

I know. I just want nice things for us for once. This fanbase has been through it.
It has, I’ve said for years that it’s time to kick down the door to the Final 4. I keep thinking it’s going to happen when we least expect it, which made me think that this could’ve been that time . We just didn’t matchup well w/ Michigan and they exposed it.

Before he took the Michigan job, he was my #1 choice to succeed Barnes. While you can never tell the future, especially with college coaching, I’ll be very shocked if he doesn’t go down as one of the best coaches of this era of basketball.
He is certainly on his way. Definitely one of the top 5 coaches in the country right now.

Reading some threads this afternoon and you really wouldn’t believe the amount of fans that desperately want Jerry Stackhouse….

Just bring the bottle
Doc up my meds
Because you basically just shut down arguably one of the top jobs in college basketball.
“If enough coaches say no we can still keep it in the family.” -Big Donors that are pissed that Hubert was fired

These guys are worse than the “Michigan Man” people.

Hahaha 😆 I came here to say something similar. I've read a lot of crazy rumors on trying to keep it in the family. For crying out loud, get a move on and be realistic and practical and find a suitable coach.

Just shows that there are a slew of moronic fans out there. That would be a horrible move.

But it’s what Coach Smith would want, and that supersedes everything else

I would hope that if they’re hell bent on getting a former player they wouldn’t have let Wes Miller go to UNCW.

As for Jerry, if you can’t make it in care bear candy land what makes anyone believe he can make it in Chapel Hill

The problem with Wes Miller is that he didnt work at Cincy. Maybe in a few years you can see what he does at Charlotte. Maybe Cincinnati was just a bad fit

I am surprised at the degree to which that mentality still permeates their program. I know that Alabama struggled with it for a while after Bear retired, but they finally snapped out of it once Saban came along, and none of the criticism of DeBoer seems to revolve around "he isn't who Bear or Saban would have wanted."

It is strange at UNC because they've had coaches post-Smith who have had success, Roy Williams of course being the most. It isn't like they are the Lady Vols, or Alabama until they hired Saban.

I guess they got their guy

Hopes for the best expects the worst

Ain’t no Jokic coming through the door
This seems like a rushed swoop hire ala Dave Hart

Even before Denver, Malone seemed like one of the few Kings coaches in a while who seemed competent (and one of the few DeMarcus Cousins liked), and they fired him anyway. No idea how he'll handle the transition back to college but I think he is a good basketball coach, and expect him to be a lot better than Hubert

Guess they didn't want to wait until the NBA regular season was over to talk to Billy. The fit is interesting. He hasn't coached in college since 2001 and never was a college head coach. However he clearly knows the game and if he has NIL support could probably do pretty well at UNC. College sports are less "college" than they used to be, that's for sure, and he can market himself/the program as a chance to play for a HC who won an NBA Finals just a couple of years ago.

It's the route that I thought Alabama would have gone down to replace Saban.

honestly, I think it’s a good hire for UNC. Certainly risky, given how long it’s been since he last coached college, but he’s still a good coach, and he’s not totally washed up like Belichick. Plus, he is younger than Donovan, so if he works out he could have a longer shelf life.

I'm at least pleasantly surprised by the hire. He built Denver into a contender and championship team. Maybe he'll find the next Jokic out there as there's been several really good Eastern European guys in college right now.

I'm surprised it's not Donovan, but it's hard to say what went on there. I'm interested in where this goes in the future for UNC.

Horrible hire. UNC's administration is a damn joke.

Edit: His daughter plays volleyball at UNC. What a great reason to hire somebody with zero college basketball head coaching experience, zero Power 4 conference coaching experience of any kind, and zero NIL experience.

I'd like him a lot if I were you.
Haha. Maybe so, but I know better than to think to this rivalry is tilting heavily in one direction and then be completely surprised by it. I remember UNC won the title in 2009 w/ Hansbrough and then Harrison Barnes was supposed to be Duke’s savior. Barnes committed to UNC kind of unexpectedly and you would’ve thought Duke was done, but then… Duke won the 2010 title and no one saw it coming . We’ll see what happens w/ this guy.

Honestly we all should have know it was going to be him when Hansbrough came out and said Malone and Donavan are ones to watch for.

Expect the worst hope for the best

I saw a rerun of the Duke/Uconn game in 99. Shameful that team lost.
