How about hiring in one of UT golden boys...Bill Bates? Anyone know what my ol' neighbor is up to?

I think he's somewhere giggling about how he was able to parlay running around on special teams like a bat out of hell into a 15 year NFL career.

So what are we lacking..discipline, heart, imagination, leadership? Someone who willed himself a 15 year NFL career on heart alone would be fine by me.

hey our special teams did good this weekend. Lucas Taylor kept us in the game and made up for his fumbling mistake.

 Come on, now. Lucas had one good return, which, in the eyes of a sensible viewer, was fraught with risk -- he switched hands in traffic and was slinging the ball around like pizza dough -- that thing gets stripped 25-50% of the time.

Now, on to the negatives: He stuttered on the opening kickoff -- firing up the crowd with a stop at the 9. He misjudged a "fair catch" -- running up to compensate and short-armed it in traffic, fumbling away a GOLDEN opportunity for some excellent field position. He ran the final kickoff out of the endzone, eating up clock and giving our "special" (again, like the miniature bus) teams a chance to commit yet another stupid foul.

As for the remainder of our special teams, Britton continues to struggle, and we get penalized on dang-near EVERY return. I'd like to see a "net return gain" stat -- with the number of flags, it's a "one step forward, two steps back" story every week. I bet it would be around zero.

I think Bates would be an EXCELLENT addition to the UT staff as Special Teams coach.

Just dont let him anywhere near the LBs (referencing the infamous Hershel Walker play).

Always been a Bates fan!
He's one of my all-time favorite Vols and Cowboys. I remember when he wasn't only a ST artist, but also a head hunting safety.

Growing up thats who i wanted to play like, tons of heart, and grit. He didnt make every tackle on kick-offs, but there was always a major collision down field.

Crompton can kick it further than Colquitt.

Dont forget the awsome kick return he had that set us up to tie up the game 3-3.

The punt return ended up being a good return, but 9 times out of 10 he will never be able to run sideways and reverse fields like that. It looked like a high school kick return.

The kickoff return was a good one though.

Nifty running ability that he's got. But he must be broken from his HS QB days. At one point in that return he looked like he was looking for an open man down field, holding the ball out from his body.

This is what Bill Bates is up to.

You might want to turn the volume down on your computer.

He could get someone to run that for him and come back home to Knoxville to help his Alma Mater!!!
