If you want a good synopsis of how to improve our defense download today's podcast (coachdougmathews.com) and listen.

Before you say "What does he know." We older fans remember 1988 when we lost the first six games of the season and coach Majors fired his defensive coordinator in mid season and put Coach Mathews running the defense. He simplified the defense and we won the next 5 games.

That was my freshman year at UT. Those first games were so sad we went from having to cheer for first downs to having not much to cheer for but the band. Guess that makes me an "older fan." 😕

Everyone knows the last five games are the easiest on the schedule. 😬

Pfftt...my freshman year was '77. I don't feel old and there are folks on here who make me look like a pup!

Mine too....rough season. We had no idea what was getting started in the second half though. It led us right into the 90's.

I did as well. Rough season, but we came back stronger than ever.

We followed up that 0-6 start by winning the last 5. And then went 11-1 in 89, with our only loss being to Bama. GBO!!!!

Doug was also removed as DC following the 1989 season when Tennessee basically out scored everyone. Opponents like Bama, LSU, Arkansas scored at will vs Tennessee. Majors hired Larry Lacewell in 1990 to head the defense and while the defense improved, a very tough schedule and injury to Chuck Webb really hurt the 90 season. Vols lost 2 games where they were lined up to score the go ahead points in the last minute and tied two games. Played about 6 or 7 ranked teams and beat SOS first gator team 45-3.

A reporter climbed up on a telephone pole and refused to come down until UT won. It was a crazy season. IIRC, a true freshman from Knoxville wound up starting in the secondary and by his senior year was the holder for placekicks....thanks to some outstanding recruiting by Majors and staff.

If the internet had been around, there would be 'fire Johnny' postings losing to Bamain 89!

And if he hadn't been a favorite son/former player, he'd have been fired after his 4th season when he went 5-6 and was 21-23-1 overall.

89 was my freshman year. Was already a UT fan, but talk about an amazing introduction to home games at Neyland . . . will never forget it. GO VOLS!

There wasn't an internet back then, but there were plenty of bumper stickers that read "Go Johnny Go and take Devoe".
