Dickey always used to say that his definition of success for UT football was "to be in the mix" at the end of the year every year. There were very very few times during the Dickey / Fulmer years when we were not "in the mix," if ever. Shoot, had we had the playoff during those years? I think we're talking about Phil Fulmer very very differently because he'd have probably another championship or two.

I therefore loved it when Fulmer said, "I like my chances with Jeremy Pruitt." I loved hearing that because it was the honest shade of Dickey logic, which privileges "being in the mix," with the understanding that you have to give yourself as many chances as possible to get that ring once. It recognizes that nothing is a slam dunk, but it's a spectrum of possibility: "I like my chances" is the perfectly honest phrase I am glad to hear back on the Hill.

And I LOVE this just as much:

"Understand that about Pruitt and you get his success at Alabama, as a recruiter and why Tennessee has handed him the key to its prominent program. When the coach says the relationships he builds with players last longer than four years, and that “You always talk about you want to finish what you start,” it’s believable.

The players certainly believe him, and in regard to this game that’s the important thing.

“It means a lot,” senior linebacker Rashaan Evans said about having Pruitt coach against Clemson at the Sugar Bowl (Monday, 8:45 p.m. ET, ESPN). “Tennessee is going to get an amazing coach, and, to be honest, I’m kind of mad that they stole him.”

In before "what did you expect him to say"?
