Dooley has done a nice job dipping into the JUCO ranks to improve our DL during his tenure, and we're not done with JUCO DL for the '13 class.

2010 - DT John Brown (failed to qualify)
2011 - DT Maurice Couch
2012 - DT Daniel McCullers
2012 - DE Darrington Sentimore
2013 - DT Ben Bradley

You just have to be careful relying on Jucos. History tends to show their success is rather limited over time.

Greater than 50% of Tennessee's Jucos end up starting at some point in their career. That little stat was in this weeks John Adams article. I had a thread earlier this week about our big successes with jucos.

As I recall Brown was a Kiffin commit and/or signee who never qualified to play - 2010 would've been his first season and he didn't make it.

So in terms of JUCO DL he's 1/1 with Couch.

only one of those guys has played and if we get the same % of contributors from the DL jucos as the other jucos we have signed the past couple years that may not be so good. I do agree if your going to take a jucos make it in the DL. Of course you can't pass on the potential of a guy like CP.

Juco does seem to produce a high % of immediate contributors.

The main thing to remember is that evaluations are CRITICAL. IF you have a couple in a single year that bust, it can royally derail multiple seasons. We crashed and burned on HIGHLY rated jucos immediately after Fred Smoot's senior season(1999) after Sherrill was incredibly successful with them for over a decade. The very mention of Arizona Western still sends many State fans on a tirade! :):banghead2:

If DD is really on the hot seat, as some say, can you blame him for getting help now rather than in 2 years? Going JUCO helps build the roster with game ready players faster. Take the Calipari approach in football recruiting, get some SEC ready players now and manage the future years later.

It could be a sound approach since the staff is starting to build relationships with HS undergrads and coaches. The more that network is built and the more solid depth you have, the less need for JUCOs.

Sentimore and McCullers are already on campus. That's 3/3

Isn't Sentimore already listed as a starter? So, I don't think we missed there. And McCullers is already on campus, so if nothing else he has qualified. I have a feeling we will be 2/2 on juco DL this year.

Lets not forget how depleted the Dline was when Dooley first got here either. He wanted to run a 3-4 from day 1, but never had enough DTs to do so. Then he missed on Gabe Wright and the other espn 150 kid who went to FSU, I think, in 2010. Then in 2011 we missed on Kirven and the other top DT down the stretch (although O'Brien was a great get). So, I think him missing Wright and the FSU kid in 2010 lead to us needing a couple of JUCO dlinemen in 2011, and then missing Kirven and the other kid lead us to needing a couple of JUCO dlinemen for the 2012 class also.
