Look at the competition. Of course he had a losing record two of the years. The list is only schools considered pretty good. Originally posted by someone on scout.

2007 (Record: 5-7)

Lost to Hawaii 45-44 (OT)
Lost at Cal 42-12 (who beat us that year too)
Lost at Fresno State 17-6
Lost at Ole Miss 24-0
Lost to Boise State 45-31
Lost at LSU 58-10

2008 (Record: 8-5)

Beat Miss. St. 22-14
Lost at Kansas 29-0
Lost at Boise St. 38-3
Lost at Hawaii 24-14
Beat Fresno State 38-35
Beat Northern Illinois in Independence Bowl 17-10 (a team we barely beat that year)

2009 (Record 4-8)

Lost to Auburn 37-13
Lost to Boise State 45-35
Lost to LSU 24-16

Puts it into perspective a little

I was trying to rationalize the crappy record myself so I thought maybe the La Tech program was so down when he took over that 17-20 was an improvement. So I checked the three years before he got there and La Tech was 16-20. I don't feel any better.

I was just about to make a lengthy post breaking down his W-L record, too.

La Tech under Dooley faced 5 SEC teams: 1-4 record (Win against Miss St. Losses to Ole Miss, Auburn, and LSU x2).

They also faced 7 ranked teams: 0-7 (Losses to #20 Hawaii, #8 Cal, #2 LSU, #14 Kansas, #17 Boise State, #5 Boise State, and #9 LSU.)

I'm trying to count how many bowl teams they faced in the seasons, too. Heck, they played 7 bowl teams this year.

Give me a break. I don't want to hear everyone telling me I'm not a true Vols fan and I have to follow Dooley with blind optimism. Urban Meyer and Nick Saban will beat this guy like a pinata.

A better analysis would be to also look at level of competition. However, this is good information.

They played seven bowl teams this year.

Mark Richt said thank you for doing your part to help him keep his job

So when Boise St goes undefeated in the WAC it's because the conference is weak and when Dooley goes 12-12 in conference play it's because the WAC is tough?

Please list the viable candidate that this statement doesn't apply to when coaching the 2010 Volunteers....

Dooley recruits at a mid major school agaist OU, Utexas, LSU, Arkansas, and Ole Miss. Can't believe he doesn't have a crystal football yet. Clueless rantards

So his record sucked because he played hard teams and La Tech is a hard place to get good players. Fine but that doesn't mean he's qualified to run a big program. We might as well hire Bobby Johnson.

Right because expecting the next coach at UT to at least have a winning record is the same as expecting him to have a NC at a mid major.

It's not the 2010 Vols I'm concerned about. It's about UT's future.

I understand that but you're assuming that we're bound for misery because he was 3 games below .500 in 3 years at a school located in Ruston, LA.

Let's let off the gas a little and stop predicting the absolute worst.

Their previous coach did better.

No, he didn't. He had a slightly higher winning percentage and he was left a better team by a guy that left for the NFL. They were about the same and went to the same number of bowls. Their former coach is also working in the NFL, but he left Dooley a 3-10 team.

Gene Chizik's winning percentage at Iowa St was pretty horrible too, but Auburn fans seem happy with their admin's choice after a full year and a New Years Day bowl win.

Remember Chizik getting verbally plastered when he got off the plane in Auburn? Hmmmm, sounds like what Dooley's getting on these threads right now.
