but lets go back 10 years and find a national champion or a Top 5 team that ran this tempo offense.

There isn't one.

We need to build an offense around our DEFENSE.

Just a fool's opinion.

This was Pruitt’s approach and the game has evolved well past it.

Georgia this year is the exception as defense is the crux of their team, but they might have the best defense in football history. They are also dropping some serious points on folks.

Scoring is the new way of college football.

What amazes me is that we had a gump trying to beat uga and bama by being "bama-like" in schemes and recruiting. The results speak for themselves. Chit, we may never be able to recruit like those two ever again. PF got damned lucky in that he got the perfect storm in that almost all our surrounding states were in complete disarray and he rode in and cherry picked the best of the best and he still only got us 1 natty despite all that NFL talent.

If we can't recruit like 'em, we need an equalizer and that might just be the type of offense Heupel runs. If we don't win a championship under him, I'll be damned happy to see exciting football in knoxville again even if it limits us to 8-10 wins and no hardware. Beats the hell outta what we've endured for the last 15-20 years.

So you want the coach fired and we start a new coaching search because that's the only way the offense changes. And as far as winning championships that's not in our near future anyways so it shouldn't matter. First we have to be good enough to not get blown out by the big 3 and we are years away from that

You mean essentially what just failed in magnificent form with Pruitt?

UGA is uniquely talented and is making it "work". But frankly Heupel or Kiffin with that roster would probably beat everyone by 40+ points.

UT has to build a D with quality depth. The most important thing on D for UT is GET OFF THE FIELD. Take risks. Even give up a few big plays... but get off the field. I hope what they learned vs UK is that they CANNOT play "bend, don't break" with an O that scores this fast.

FWIW, Heupel isn't using a bunch of new plays. He just runs his O faster to create defensive mistakes. What he's doing is MUCH more likely to make UT competitive for championships than building the "offense around our defense".

Not necessarily. UF is a mess and that provides an opening.

The key is how Heupel recruits the portal.

PS- Saban is a pretty amazing coach. One of the reasons is that he hasn't let the game pass him by holding onto something that "worked".... even as well as his D first philosophy worked to win championships.

The best coach in the game and a guy who will go down as one of the best coaches in CFB history... flipped and now builds his team around his O. His D is more like what I suggested above for UT. Get stops and get the ball back to the explosive, big play O.

IMO, Bama will beat UGA for this reason. Bama has the talent and depth on O to do what UT did at times... consistently. Then they'll get behind UGA's secondary. On D, they're too good for either of UGA's QB's.

If I'm wrong then it will give a little more credence to your notion.

OK Let's go back 50 years and find a team that didn't run the wishbone. Or twenty or thirty more, and list one that didn't run the single wing.

Schemes change. The game evolves. But I believe the big key to success is going to be depth and development. Having plenty of horses to match up to the competition. Depth is going to be tough until the recruitment gets going. Development? Well there are plenty of indicators to suggest that part is going well.

Instead of building the offense arund the defense? I would build defense around the offense. One that causes turnovers, and puts the ball back into the hands of the offense. And on both sides of the ball, have plenty of players ready to back up starters so when someone goes down, the next guy steps up and creates problems for the opponents.
