If Cal plays great and we destroy them by running for 250 yards and throwing for 380 yards would that make you feel like we should be a powerhouse to be dealt with in 2007 or does it not mean spit because they are Cal? Im wondering if we look great the first game if I would be justified to get my hopes up. Will the first game set a tone for the rest of the season?:hmm:

yeah, it would be a good start, but guarantees nothing for the rest of the season. last year was a good example.

It could be something that really gives us momentum and confidence throughout the rest of the season.

I think it can show the potential we could reach. But it would still yet to be seen if that potential could be reached in other games.

The year Brent Schaffer was playing QB trading with Ainge(?) I thought we looked awsome and unbeatable. It was our first game, who was that team we played? 2-3 years ago.

If you lose, it kills your confidence. If you win, it makes you question whether it is a harbinger of another season like last year's.

win=undefeated in SEC
lose=undefeated in SEC

A win would be nice for conversations about special seasons.

The goal is to win your conference. In September, you must keep your focus on the task at hand.

Who is your first tough game besides us?

None. UT is the first decent opponent we have pretty much every year.

I agree with the bolded portion. When Spurrier came to UF and fan hopes were high, Spurrier kept talling everyone that the focus was not on winning the national championship, but was instead on winning the SEC. A lot of us felt at the time that he was just being overly sentimental about the conference since he had played in it and kind of rolled our eyes.

It has become clear, however, that without winning the SECE and then the conference, pretty much nothing else is in the picture.

IF the Vols beat Cal it will mean one of two things, either:

(a) Every expert who has picked Cal as the best receiving corps in the nation is an idiot; or
(b) UTK has answered the questions in the defensive backfield.

I'd have to go with (b) until proven otherwise.

Actually, there is another option, and that is that neither (a) nor (b) is true.

Wow. What a waste of time to even go out there and play the game, then. I'm going to feel stupid for even watching it now.

I just want to make clear that if we did lose to Cal, that all hope is not lost. We could still win the Sec. I know it would suck to lose to Cal, but I don't want people to be gloom and doomers for the rest of the season.
