Does Hastert Eventually Step Down?

Considering he will not be Speaker come January, I doubt he steps anywhere.

So you think he remains in this spot and draws negative attention to the party before the election?

Who will the Speaker be?

From Drudge . . .

A posting of an unredacted instant message sessions between Rep. Mark Foley and a former congressional page has apparently exposed the identity of the now 21 year-old accuser...

ABC RELEASED TRANSCRIPT OF CHAT BETWEEN FOLEY AND A MAN WHO WAS 18 AT THE TIME OF THE INSTANT MESSAGE EXCHANGE.... NETWORK GAVE IMPRESSION MESSAGE WAS TO 'UNDER AGE' TEEN... DEVELOPING...
This is still pathetic behavior by Foley, but it's a little odd that ABC would allow the impression that the accuser was underage. I don't know that it changes anything.

So, basically, Foley had an online, consentual sexual relationship with someone who was of the legal age of consent. He did not lie about it when it was brought into the open and he resigned. I would say there is absolutely no scandal here.

I wish it was that easy, but I think the contact came both before and after the page turned 18. It's a little unclear what happened when, but it appears that the IM's that look like explicit harassment occurred after the page was 18.

Before we start jumping to conclusions we have no info on which set of messages were during what period. There are more than one sets of IM's in the news. WHo knows what were during what period.

Now there are at least two other former pages saying Foley made advances at them while they were pages.

Now you all that said we need to wait for the facts, let's not suddenly jump to conclusions that this was all legal and consensual. The age of consent is 16. But I seem to recall during the whole Clinton affair how people decried Clinton for doing what he did on the job.

The spin machines are out in force. Before this is over, the media will somehow be the evil in this as one side makes the other look like a greater evil than someone using his power and influence to seduce underage unpaid pages on the job.

I read all of this about the original emails and I'd like to think this would have raised a few more alarms than it did:

Whoa, whoa, whoa! You're hearkening back to what the other side did. You can't do that, remember? :p

Awesome!

So it's OK for you to say that, but no one else? Like I said, the same people who were calling for that line of thinking are suddenly jumping on the Drudge wagon saying nothing was wrong here.

Drudge bandwagon? All he's doing is parroting the report that is being put out by ABC News. If you'll notice above, I actually said I wasn't sure what the timing of all the messages was and that I wasn't sure if it even mattered. The only thing I'm saying is that all we've heard for the past couple of days is "Protect the children". You'd think ABC would have been a little more clear about the age of the accuser.

Drudge is not parroting a report put out by ABCNews. Read Drudge's flash closer. Drudge is breaking the story. ABC's response to Drudge's story was the IM's took place before and after the 18th birthday. Drudge failed to provide proof as well.

Considering the emails as well? Considering the other comments coming out and the reputation Foley has?

It's been so long since I saw you take a conservative position that it's easy to forget. :)

I guess you've missed the posts even this week about the bloated government and the comment about FEMA spending. Have I taken a liberal position?

OK, you're right, the flash is not a link to ABC, but rather a statement from ABC followed by Drudge reporting something that was briefly posted at ABCNews.com. Obviously, the reason he can't provide proof is that the accuser's information was removed and he has rightly withheld the infromation.

Like I said, I'm not debating the fact that contact occurred both before and after the page turned 18.

I'm just kidding with you. Unlike some Republicans, it doesn't completely mortify me when someone disagrees with me.

You are supposed to threaten me with banishment from the party, tell me I'm going to hell, tell me I'll never run for office....oh, wait - that's been done already.
