Some of the football players, and other non basketball athletes, playing exhibition basketball games against former athletes in some smaller towns in Tennessee?

I do! I registered just to be the first to confirm your memory is correct. I remember several Vols coming to Elizabethton High School for a basketball exhibition around '71. I was in grade school and got to see former QB Bobby Scott who was on his way to the NFL to be Archie Manning's backup with the Saints, among others. I remember it being a great experience. I had forgotten all about it until I saw your post.

You never wanted to play the Lakers!
My freshman year (78-79) the Lakers beat us (Hess Hall, 2nd floor) 5-3 in the campus wide softball championship game. My senior year (81-82) I pledged a small frat just to play QB on their flag football team. We won the frat championship and the Lakers beat us 24-18 in the campus wide flag football championship.

No, but when I was a senior in high school Ray Buzzard brought the swim team to Huntsville to give us an exhibition in our brand new Natatorium (now called Huntsville Aquatic Center). The team was impressive in their orange suits. Maybe that's why I went to Tennessee. That brand new Natatorium turned 50 this year (I swam for Piedmont for you Huntsville folks).
