When you spend 7 months in a foreign country with no TV, Internet or Video Games you can find an interest in alot of games that you otherwise might not have played.

I got into chess pretty good for a year or so. I liked reading a couple books and understanding the opening, mid-game, and finishing theories used by better players. Once you start learning some of that, you can take your game to a new level rather quickly. It's been a few years since I've played, though.
