Does anyone actually know anything about this year's team?

Fall practice is over. The roster is down to 35 players. There have been public scrimmages almost daily for a month. This site has provided extensive discussions on hats and logos and other vital matters, but there has been no commentary about the team itself.

Any idea about who will be in the weekend rotation or how good they might be, which newcomers may contribute, which returning players will step into bigger roles, or how the team might fare in its non-conference or SEC schedules?

I feel Ethan Bennett will have a bigger role on the team this year. Should have got more PT last year

I can tell you what I saw based on the fall game with Western Carolina. They are going to play small ball, which to me means they will get on base any way they can and run the bases aggressively to score runs. Which is smart, since they don't have a lot of guys who hit for power or average. They looked well coached on the bases and in the field.

The best player in that game for UT was starting pitcher Drew Steckenrider. Steckenrider allowed one run on three hits while striking out two in two innings. He also DH'ed and went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, two RBIs and a run scored.

They may not win the SEC this year, but they ain't coming in last anymore. And I don't think it will be long before they are competing for SEC championships.

Serrano will have us competing this year and I think we can make a run at 6th-8th in the SEC which gets us to Hoover.

Would have been nice if Betts and the big time pitcher from Connecticut would have come instead of going to minor leagues. Those guys were difference makers.

They're shooting to finish 6th in the league this year. The players and coaches know where we're at right now, and the heavy recruiting for next year shows that. They want to play hard, be competitive and make it to Hoover. Do that and win your mid-week games, and you're in a regional. Provides a huge launching pad for next year.

Mr. Steckenrider will be Mr. Everything for this team. With a good season on the mound and at plate, Drew may be a dark horse for SEC POY.

As per weekend rotation, I think that's completely in the air. We will likely be working that out in pre-conference slate and will be given a lot of guys shots

Agree on both counts, Frye.

Just a warning to fans, those early season games might be ugly while they're sorting this thing out. Be patient.

I guarantee this team will be alot more fun to watch than Raleigh's teams were. THey are actually getting coached. IMO, they will win some games they shouldn't but will be challenged to finish in the upper tier of the SEC this season. Next season, watch out.

I have never seen college baseball before... Is it as good to watch as MLB? Are we a good side?

Unfortunately, college baseball is not as popular as college basketball and football, mainly due to the publicity factor. It's not shoved down our throats by the ESPNs and Fox Sport's of the world, however there are some very good players at the college level and several games are very exciting. They aren't on TV much, but once the College World Series gets rolling, it rivals the excitement of any other college sport, imo.

Thats a shame, they certainly don't show it over here... We don't even get NHL anymore.

I listen to ESPN Radio New York and 1080 the Fan religiously but they never ever talk about it.. I don't even remember them mentioning the world series.

Why is it so unpopular?

My guess having to compete with COllege Basketball more people would rather watch College Basketball, and March Madness.

Anyone else exited for Vols Baseball in 2012?

College baseball is actually a lot of fun to watch. All the players hustle, most play by hitting behind the runners, advancing base runners, hitting cutoffs, etc. While the talent level is not on the professional baseball level, the unpredictability, hustle, and fundamentals make collegiate baseball a fun sport to watch. I believe in a year or two, the Vols will be competitive again. The Coach was a great hire, the best in any sport in quite a while.
