14. Tennessee: We're going to give Erik Ainge the benefit of the doubt and assume his knee will be 100 percent and will hold up through a brutal schedule. You know what happens when you assume.

Arkansas Razorbacks, NCAA Football, Auburn Tigers, Boise State Broncos - CBS SportsLine.com

Picks Cal #16

16. California: Fans are worried that Jeff Tedford will leave because tree huggers are blocking stadium improvements. Could that void his contract if the upgrades aren't made? Stay tuned.

Dodd = idiot

I don't even know where to start with his "comments." First Cal fans are not worried at all about tedford leaving because of the "tree huggers'. Second, the tree huggers are not blocking stadium improvements, the seismic lawsuit by the city is. And third, the new contract is public record and no new facilities most definetly does not void Tedford's contract.

And the idiot picks UCLA #9. Did no one watch the FSU bowl game, or the oregon game, or the Cal game?

I don't think he means "void" literally. Coaches come and go as they please. If they don't upgrade, I could see him "voiding" the contract and just going somewhere better.

There was a rumor that tedford's buyout went to zero in his last contract if the facilities didn't get built. I assume that is what he is refering too.

Dodd didn't either I think. I expect national writers to watch the games, not vol fans.

UCLA's vaunted defense allowed FSU to have their best offensive game in years. I'm not too worried about UCLA contending for anything.

The fact is that SC didn't get up for that game. People think different because it was a rival game, but what they don't realize is that SC players have zero respect for UCLA (or did before the game at least). They got up for ND, Cal, and Oregon. They thought they would roll UCLA with no effort. The fact is UCLA has mediocre talent, no playmakers on offense, and a lousy coach.

You're right about that. During the game I made the comment, "I can't get over how flat and uninterested USC looks when there's a trip to the national championship game on the line," and then I remembered that I'd seen that kind of effort before. Five years previously, as a matter of fact.

Dodd has 5 SEC-East teams in his top 25. That would be nice but I don't think it's possible, somebody has to lose those divisional games.

I had blocked that out until now. You're gonna pay for my therapy.

All in all, 14th for the Vols is probably a logical ranking. There are too many questionmarks at receiver and on the lines to put them in the top 8 or so, there is too much returning talent on the team as a whole to drop them below about 16th. So I'll acknowlege this with a shrug and an "eh" and wait for the more respected meaningless rankings to be published.

Slick Rick says, that is actually a pretty fair preseason ranking. We were barely ranked at the end of last season so it would be hard to say we deserve any higher.

That's the truth.

I'd have a hard time putting the Vols higher than where they finished last season... on the fringe of the top 25.

I wouldn't. Key returners at QB, RB, OL, and all over the defensive side of the ball say that we should be better than the 25th best team in the country (I said earlier that I thought somewhere between 8 and 16 was appropriate.)

Preseason rankings are, after all, about what a team should be.

FSU's offense output in that game was an absolute anomaly, UCLA will benefit from playing defense in a conference where no one else does. I think 9 may be a bit high, but not entirely inconceivable. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if they gave USC a run for their money for the top spot in the P10 this year.

When you lose what they lose, if your coach's initials aren't PC, I am sure.

Considering he has the players to run that offense he has wanted to, if they can come out of the gate well at the beginning of the year, then they can have an outstanding season.
