Anyone have any advice for someone with terrible knee pain? I was playing paintball earlier and my knee went "POP! POP! POP! POP!" followed by severe pain about 4 times in a row and several times in later matches. I was crouched and apparently my knee was in bad position.

Any advice is appreciated... Ice doesn't work and pain pills have no effect on me.

I would recommend calling your doctor if you are in a lot of pain. I messed my left knee up last year and have no idea how. My orthopedic sent me to PT and that helped, it's fine now. Motrin doesn't work for you?

Did the "pop pop pop pop" sound like stepping on a bunch of twigs? I've sublocated my kneecap about 6 times, and that is what it sounds like. If that's what it was, your kneecap probably popped in and out of place really quickly and it will bruise the cushiony wall surrounding the kneecap. Sometimes I can move through the pain, but a couple of times it has made me bed ridden for a week. But if you were able to keep playing through it, you should be completely fine in 2-3 days.

Of course, that is if it is what happened to me. Your best bet will be to see a doctor, obviously.

Where in your knee? Front? Back? Side?

Back and sides, no front pain.

In high school I completely tore my MCL playing football and never had it repaired... Maybe that has something to do with it? I know that has to be the cause of most of my daily knee pain.

It sounded more like when my paintball gun was firing than twigs crackling, which is about 10X louder... that's what I thought it was at first.

It didn't hurt so bad until after I got home and back in the warmth.

I'd get to an Orthopedist and have him get you on some PT. Mine makes pops like that occasionally but it's just scar tissue breaking up from previous surgeries. Scares me more than it actually hurts

An Ortho evaluation sounds warranted -- he or she can determine whether or not you need an MRI.

Any swelling? Is the pain constant or only when you bend the knee? If it stays bent is the pain constant? If it isn't noticably better within 24 hours, get to your doctor and get checked out.

It's getting better but it's still very painful. I just got off of work where I was standing/walking all day. I don't see swelling, though. It only hurts when I bend it and it's constant.

get to a doctor. Even if it starts feeling better that doesn't mean you are still not injured. I was up walking around on a torn ACL and meniscus within 1-2 days.

It's getting better, now I've got a problem with my foot that should be looked at. I still have pain in my knee, but I think I just pulled a ligament in it.

Sound like you did not have your knee all the way hidden from your opponents, is it possible the pop sound was a paintball gun, thanks Capt. O

My knee hurt when I bent it, really bad, the orthopedic said he thought I had some torn cartilage and sent me to PT. If that didn't help it then he would schedule me for an MRI.

That was my elbow later in that match as I was running...

But seriously, I'll know more in the morning. Right now there isn't much pain.
