ESPN subtly launched a huge "anybody but Peyton" campaign for the Heisman in 1997, desperately trying to show that Peyton had real competition for the award. Once Woodson started making a few plays, they hyped him up like crazy, often whining about how defensive players are never considered and even went as far as saying, "There's so much bias in Peyton's favor. What chance does a black defensive player have against a white Southern QB?" When Woodson won, Chris Fowler (I can't remember the exact wording), said our fans were reacting like trailer trash, or something like that. In '98, Corso picked Syracuse, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and FSU to beat us. Corso even said Houston (back when they were terrible), would give us a great game because their run defense was so good (UT gained over 300 yards on the ground against them). When Tee Martin set the record for most consecutive passes completed, I remember during the ESPN highlight reel, the commentators downplayed it, only talkong about how terrible South Carolina was.
