Do you Run?……Walk?….Bike?…..Swim?

I swim. It’s better for my back, which currently has 3 herniated discs.

Yesterday, I swam 2400 yards.

400 warm-up

2x100 freestyle on 1:45
4x75 choice stroke on 1:30
4x50 free on 1:00
8x25 choice on :40

4x100 kick w/ fins on 1:45
1x100 breaststroke kick, no fins

6x50 pull w/ paddles free on 1:00
2x50 pull backstroke on 1:05

200 easy cooldown

I have no idea what I could do now but once went 45:92 in the 100 freestyle (yards) that would have been around 1986.
I’ve considered a swim spaw as I get older if running ever becomes a problem.

Back in the day we had a motto among the sprinters.
“When the going gets tough, the sprinters have finished”
Or
“When the going gets tough the sprinters get out”

45.92 is way faster than I ever was, but I was never good at the 100. I never could get the pace of it right. I’d either wear myself out too quickly or have too much left in the tank when it was over. I was better at the 50 and 200.

Swam 2400 yards again today. It takes me about 50 minutes to do.

400 warm-up

Main set:
3x100 IM on 1:50
8x25 freestyle reverse build on :35
-start as a sprint, gradually get slower
4x50 choice stroke pace on 1:05
4x50 freestyle pace on :55

8x50 kick w/ fins on :55
-alt. on stomach and back by 50s
2x50 breastroke kick on 1:05

6x50 free pull w/ paddles on 1:00
2x50 backstroke pull on 1:05

200 easy cooldown

My warm-up, kick set, and pull sets are usually very close to being the same all the time. The main set is where I usually mix it up. Before I had my back injury, I was swimming about 3200 yards in an hour. So I’m about 75% there right now. I’ll keep slowly building the yardage, as long as my back allows it. I’m in no hurry.

Let's say 2 miles in 20 minutes. Stopped half way to do some upper body, and forgot to start my timer again until I was at 1.5 miles.
