hire an adequate coaching staff? Do you think CPF will go out an hire a coach based on how conservative he is or use this as an opportunity to open up the playbook?

None of the above.

I think it will be a combo of your choices.

so he'll hire a conservative coach and use him to open the playbook?

I think CPF knows the importance of this hire better than any of us.

I agree pj I think the best decision for the program will be made. May not be the most popular choice but I think it will be the right one. With that being said I have no idea what direction we are headed in the search but I think the will try and get the right guy:)

What I meant to say was I think his conservative nature will keep him from hiring someone he considers too far out of the box. But in his mind it will be a big change.

I agree CPF understands the importance but what kind of replacement will he seek and hire? It is now a waiting game.

You need to remember better the situation.... The boosters got involved in this hire also....CPF did not have as much of a choice to go outside the box as alot of people would think... At that time, there was not a reason to go outside the box T Martin another year and a C. Clausen coming... Talent of Ainge and Schaffer still competitive... CPF and the Staff did more to displace Sanders than Sanders did to himself...

Phil had the same choice in 1998 and then again in 2005. Both times he went with the path of least resistance, chosing what was easy and close at hand rather than branching out to something new. Why would it be any different now?

Because this time he is not on top of the Mountain like he was in 1998. The 2005 was for stability and booster supported.... The AL and SC Games Boosters were calling MH from the Boxes demanding that Cut be brought back or that Sanders be fired.....

maybe Fulmer has seen the light....the college game will pass him by if he doesn't hop on the train. I remember when Fulmer was the young, upcomming coach that was getting all the positive buzz. I honestly can't tell you why we've fallen off other than complacency. Apathetic people cause more damage by doing nothing. We should try and act like the championship team we want to be, and not like the mediocre team we have become. This would include us having to make a "splash" with this OC decision. Just as important, however, is the replacing of position coaches we are losing. Hate to say it, but the best replacement for Cutcliffe as QB coach would seem to be Randy Sanders. I also think we have to make a move and get an energetic, knowledgeable minority coach. Anyone think Al Wilson could do a good job as a LB coach and get some of the load off of Chavis (who, IMO, is on borrowed time). If Roper leaves, getting a minority coach at RB could also help. We have so many possibilities, and the way we handle them will affect Tennessee for the next decade, write it down. We need an innovative, strong offensive mind for the OC. We need position coaches that are adament about the fundamentals on both sides of the ball. Does anyone have anybody in mind that satisfies these requirements? This decision will solidify Tennessee's place as a middle of the road team or a team that will return to national prominence.

....Please Coach Fulmer and AD Mike Hamilton, do what is right for the University of Tennessee.

until he proves me wrong, i think we go right down the tennessee good ole boy road again and find someone familiar with the same stinking playbook that came with the mayflower

We need to look outside the family. Tennessee has ran the same offense for 2 decades. But things change and so do offensive schemes. We need a new OC with innovation.

He'll keep it in the UT family and we'll be the same ole' boring to watch 9-4 Vols (at best). My hopes are we go OUTSIDE the UT family and get some modern day ideas and we better get a top notch recruiter if TT is leaving. Troop is the ONLY reason our recruiting picked back up the last few years. I'd guess 80% of our higher rated recruits would not be there if not for Troop. The guy is VERY good w/ the kids and he can sell the program better than our own Fulmer.

Think about it, who in the right mind would want to come play in that dink and dump 80's style UT offense. You'd have to be a GREAT salesman to convince a kid to come here w/ these outdated schemes..

Just like many of our own coaches have said over the years, its basically the same offense Walt Harris and those guys brought here in the 80's.

No, I don't. I think Coach Fulmer will do what he always does and hire whoever makes him feel comfortable.

I only hope that whoever makes him comfortable has at least a somewhat updated offensive scheme.

I won't be surprised either way. BUT, I do think CPF understands more than ever the importance of this hire. Honestly, I dont care if it's "in the family" or not. Our "playbook" is not the problem, there are plenty of "spread" plays, "gadget" plays, and such, our playbook does actually consist of more than Off tackle right, and bubble screen. Our play CALLING has been conservative. For whatever reason, I dont know, inaptitude, conservative coach, I dont know, but Ive been following UT football for many moons as many of you have, and look back as far as the Andy Kelly era, look what we did with Shular, Peyton, even Casey, we opened it up and showed glimpses at times of opening things up, this past season was the worst that I can remember of the offense being so conservative, I just beleive it was the QB. There were alot of plays called in which we had receivers 20-25 yards downfield, even open receivers sometimes, but Ainge elected to either dump it off or toss it to the sideline.

One thing to feel good about is Mike Hamilton. If CF seriously thinks about "outside the family" who better than MH to help with the search.
