Some keys that Fulmer stressed, improving the team's short yardage offense, and preventing the big plays on defense and special teams.

This was from the press conference, I copied striaght from the link to WVLT on VolNation.

The Coach said our team needs to improve on short yard offense. I almost fell out of my chair. I don't post often, but I do read most of the posts and I can tell you that for most of (including myself) this weekends game made it official, Fulmer has ridden what 90's success he did have into the ground.
However, for him to come out and say that our team needs to improve the short yardage offense is astounding. What about the deep ball? What about running? This man is a joke.

Well, it seems to me that if we improve our short yardage offense, then we convert more 3rd downs, stay on the field more, punt less, score more, not have to throw deep, etc, etc, etc.

And how do you think we'd do that? By improving our running.

I know that we are all questioning Fulmer, but at least do it correctly.

the short yardage offense is bad, and a point of improvement that needs to be addressed.

and i did also see comments from him regarding the "down the feild" aspect of the passing game.

what got me more than any of that, cause at least all of that is true, was the same old rhetoric about "we believe in what we are doing, and it was won us a lot of ball games in the past". just more of the same, and until something big changes, the results will be the same.

Sorry, I was so bent out of shape about it I wasn't being clear. I mean only to say that this man, after being trounced by UF, seems to still be making the same old tired excuses.
It also seems pretty obvious with these remarks that he isn't considering a move to retire.

Clean house start over and by 2011 we may have a shot at being a contender again

And one last comment, the short yard offense is just about the only thing that has been going our way this year, though obviously not in the UF game, where we were out played and out coached in all aspects.

no sry, im so tired of hearing this bs meaning the same old excuses and promises of improvement and then the next game comes, with no improvement in sight. I can't trust this coaching staff anymore, all the promises of a dedicated running game before the season...blah blah blah

what the hell do you expect them to say? There are no quick fixes. He pointed out things that needed to be improved and what the team was working on. I'm just at a loss to figure out what people think they should be saying.

I was more intrigued by his snappy quotes here are a few:
"stay the course"
"were certainly not dead"
"underestimated harvins speed"(that one's a hoot)
"No time to panic"
"There is alot of football left to be played"(Thats kind of a scary thought right now)
"were working like heck"(everyone's all time favorite)

I think i've heard these before.:question:

Right, it has been the deep ball and our amazing defense. I am not saying it is amazing, but out of every aspect of Tennessee's game, this has been best. Ugly, but the least ugly of the bunch.

Have you ever heard another defeated coach during a press conference? They are pissed. They are on the verge of a breakdown. They are like a dog thats eatting. . . no one really wants to get too close. Phil, however, just seems a little upset, like his team lost and he missed getting to watch Saturday morning cartoons.

everyone I talked to said he looked miserable on the CPF show. I don't get the show but trust those who said it.

I didn't see the show this week, I would have vomited on myself, but I have seen it after some other key loses (Vandy, Arkansas last year) and he always seems a little pouty after a loss, but always says the same thing. Trouble with Phil is that he can identify a problem on the team or a weakness but he can't fix it, esp. if it is himself.
From what I have read in the local media (Nashville) and am seeing on TV, it looks as though stubborn Phil just doesn't want to leave, but rather go down with the ship.

There are more than 3 things that happen in a football game. I'd say our intermediate passing game is the strength of the team.
