i dunno how early you go back on Dave, but i remember his shows on the lawn a WFP.

My first show was at 328 Performance Hall in Nashville in the Fall of '94. The WFP shows were probably my favorites.

no way is DMB like John Mayer.

I don't know what aspect yall are trying to compare but I was at the concert for Virginia Tech last fall and John Mayer came out and played with DMB...

It was the first time they had done it but they have since played together again.

I mean the sound.

disagree on sound as well.

However, what you of John Mayer is vastly different than his concerts. On that they may be the same. John Mayer is an incredibly gifted guitarist and why he and his record company make him sound so pop-ish is beyond me. Other than the fact that they evidently feel that's how he can make the most money.

Yea John Mayer would actually fit in very well with DMB on some stuff. He is incredibly talented and his personal stuff like volfanbill pointed out isn't like the poppy sound the label distributes. He going to make more money that way so he does it but if you listen to stuff like the John Mayer Trio it's not the same.

the only problem i have with mayer is that when he plays, he always has that BS look on his face likes he's truly doing something ground breaking on stage. the look like what's he playing is going to become legendary all around the world. i get the impression that he thinks he invented the guitar.

but he was banging with Jessica Simpson so he gets my props.

never paid close enough attention, so I don't know you're probably right. I do like his live stuff though. He has some great riffs. The only time I really remember paying to attention to what he looked like was his skit on Chappelle Show and I thought that was funny stuff.

To clarify:

John Mayer is a fantastic blues guitarist, and I actually thought that his most recent album Continuum really showcased his talent.

Dave Matthews plays more of a jazz-based style of jam-rock, with catchy, melodic riffs and vocals that appeal to a wide array of listeners. His songwriting is both infectious and profound -- fearlessly commenting on love, war, life, death, fun, responsibility, and religion.

Lumping the two together, is absurd. While both are phenomenal musicians, the sound is very different.

I am actually a huge fan of Matthews and Mayer and not one bit ashamed to claim that. I've played guitar and piano for years, write continuously, listen to almost everything, and would list both of these guys in my short list of favorites.
