Dillon Bates status?

Bates is in the "two deep" if 3 LBs are used. For Shoop it appears he's going nickle mostly against spread-option teams. That leaves two LBs, and the starters are both NFL locks.
Log jam at the position. But, I'm still surprised at Bynum as a starting "OLB". Sapp, Bates, or McDowell would have been my expectation there.

Do you think the fact that his name is Bates might have possibly bumped his recruiting ranking?

Could be. But the kid is very physically talented. Ran and jumped very well at The Opening and had a great offer list......
held offers from Alabama, Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Ole Miss, among others.

I've heard that, in addition to his injuries, his issues are understanding the playbook/schemes and "toughness". Tifwiw.

I was very excited about this kid, but sadly, he has been a bust up to this moment. He was one of our most coveted recruits that class and it seems like since the injury he hasn't been the same player. Really unfortunate.

Question???? Why do all you experts on vol nation concider everybody a bust if they don't start as a freshman.

He's not sniffing the field outside of special teams, and he's been here 3 years now. Perhaps the light comes on later this year or in years 4 or 5, and I sure hope it does for Dillon. But he's in year 3 now and far from being a freshman.

Let's just hope for the best from Mr. Bates & move on from this thread.

Excuuuuse the hell out of me for asking a legitimate question. Kid had lots of hype and was highly touted but isn't in the LB rotation where we are supposedly thin

Linebacker depth chart:

WLB: JRM, McDowell, Bates, El. Berry

MLB: Kirkland, Jumper, Bryant, Buteli

SLB: Bynum, Smith, Blakley

Bates is MIA . Would think he would be a better option than kenny bynum but coach thig thinks otherwise maybe he will start when JRM leaves always thought he would come in and start by his sophomore year

He played on special teams last week. One might have thought Cortez Mcdowell was a bust as well since he was the same class as Bates, same star rating as Bates. But he finally had an opportunity to show what he's got last Thursday. I don't think we're as thin at LB as some think, it's just we have guys like JRM and DKJr as starters and they are pretty incredible on the field. I hope we don't see Bates this year unless it's against Ohio or Tennessee Tech, but I wouldn't pass judgement on him yet. Injuries have plagued him thus far, looks like he's healthy this year.

Our linebackers sure didn't look incredible on the field last week when Appalachian State ran all over our defense.

You know he played pretty darn good his freshman year until he got hurt. He was very good in coverage for a LB.
