I've been covered up with work and life in general and didn't follow the boards much this off season, but I keep hearing how thin we are at LB and don't recall seeing Dillon Bates in the two deep or even in the game last week. Is he injured?

He played on special teams last week. One might have thought Cortez Mcdowell was a bust as well since he was the same class as Bates, same star rating as Bates. But he finally had an opportunity to show what he's got last Thursday. I don't think we're as thin at LB as some think, it's just we have guys like JRM and DKJr as starters and they are pretty incredible on the field. I hope we don't see Bates this year unless it's against Ohio or Tennessee Tech, but I wouldn't pass judgement on him yet. Injuries have plagued him thus far, looks like he's healthy this year.

He's just not in the mix at LB, despite potential depth concerns there. Great kid, glad he's a Vol, but he's pretty much just a special teams player here. Just the way it is.

Thanks KB for the info/insight; hopefully swchandler is right and Dillon will get his shot like Cortez and do well here.

Dillon is a red shirt sophomore, so he has plenty of life in him to make an impact on the hill. I am not ready to count him out just yet. His multiple injuries have set him back kinda far from the pack but he is a great prospect in size and speed. He shown the talent on special teams, and hopefully he can stay healthy this season and get a crack at the LB rotation next season.

I was very excited about this kid, but sadly, he has been a bust up to this moment. He was one of our most coveted recruits that class and it seems like since the injury he hasn't been the same player. Really unfortunate.

The shoulder surgery set him back a lot...kinda like Andrew Butcher with his knee issues.

Wasn't he listed as one of the linebackers in a situation where we use 3 linebackers?

In some capacity, yes. I did hear/read I think something from Shoop one time recently where he included Bates, and I was very happy to hear/read it.

But when I have heard different sources discuss our situation at linebacker, regardless or Sam or Mike or I guess now Star position, these are the names I consistently hear....JRM, Sapp, McDowell, Kirkland, Jumper, Bynum and even Bituli. Almost every time, Bates is not brought up unless the interviewer is asking about Bates because he notices his name wasn't initially mentioned.

Bates is healthy and ready, when the staff is not preoccupied with using Bynum and Jumper. smh.

Yes and no. Yes, because his name is Bates but no because he was a highly sought after, very talented and athletic high 4 star recruit.

Do you think the fact that his name is Bates might have possibly bumped his recruiting ranking?
