I don't see him on the 2 deep and did not see him get action vs BG. Does anyone know what is going on with him?

Injury/rehab + he's not a MLB. Heard CBJ say that for now Bates will get playing time on special teams and they'll take a look at him at OLB.

It would be better to have Bates at OLB then Maggitt. Need to put Maggitt at DE and let him run free. But if he's not healthy there's nothing we can do.

His injuries have plagued his progression that most 2nd/3rd year players should have already taken. He was looking great last year before his injury.

Cortez McDowell or Weathered. We're good there...let him ease his way back. The way JRM's playing we may need him there next year.

Not developing on schedule. Still early in career though.

He's a RS FR. Why is anyone even concerned at this point? He's got 3 more years to see plenty of playing time. We're so used to seeing FR play that we expect it now. I'd rather be like Bama and not see a kid until he's a Jr then watch him get drafted off of 1-2 years of production.

I agree but the concern is that we will be playing another true freshman or walk on in his place and this kid came in highly touted at this position and it is now year two for him. Granted he's been hurt and working his way back, but if he is OK/healthy enough to go sprinting down the field hitting folks on ST, then I would expect him to be OK to see some playing time/reps at LB if it is a conditioning thing. "Working his way back" cannot be from a schematic/learning standpoint (year two in the same system), I am not buying that, so that begs the question of maybe something else is going on here....

Give him/it a break. Great kid. Tough injury. He will contribute before its over if he can heal and get back on the field.

He came in as a 207# OLB did he not? At this point he and Kirkland would be about even considering Bates got very few snaps last year from his injury. The bigger beef should be why Bynum as a 240# RS Jr can't get on the field. A guy this staff recruited heavily at Cincy to fit their system. We shouldn't have to rely on Bates, Kirlkand or Jumper.

Yep, I guess that is true, and don't forget about Austin Smith and Gavin Bryant-- where is he? Sapp should push by the second half of the season for some reps at OLB- he is too athletic and fast like Weatherd.

I can't speak for OP, but I know that I am anxious for the kid to see the field, being that he is a legacy Vol and his dad is highly regarded. I just hope he gets healthy soon and reaches his potential. Even if we have to wait a year or so, really cheering for Dillon to be an impact.

His dad was a great player.
