Didnt Bill Battle call a dumb fake punt once?

Been doing a walkabout through dawg and tide forums.

General consensus is...
You never call a fake punt on 4th and 11 in those circumstances. A dawg forum has a hilarious thread on it. Mostly filled with random curse words, with the word kirby sprinkled in.
Bama was in safe defense, they noticed fields and and the primary receiver and pointed like mad men.

In this case on 4th and 11, in that position, in that kind of game, you recognize the gambit failed and call the damn time out.

Simple as that. Anything else is just mindlessly admiring the clouds while you step on a rattlesnake.

Not only was it dumb, but bama seen it coming a mile away and lined up in their regular D, and Kirby didnt even change the call. Guess Kirby isnt very Smart after all

The dumb part was making that call with a freshman QB. If Fields had not panicked and made the pitch UGA would have had a 1st down and possibly more.

Burt I do like the fact that Kirby looks like the coach that can’t win the big one. I also like the the fact that UGA fans are in total despair this morning. No SEC championship and no chance at the playoffs with a talented team.

The fake punt was not a good play at all, but I believe that Smart’s bigger mistake was not going for it on 4th and short on the possession where they missed the relatively short field goal. I know that Georgia has a great kicker, but if they managed to go up 35-14 at that point then it was pretty much over.

I like the, "That call would make Les Miles shake his head."
I liked this one...
"Kirby wasn’t even playing checkers on that one. He was sitting in the corner seeing how many checkers he could fit in his mouth.
If I believed in conspiracies, I would think the play was set up to give Alabama the win and Hurts the chance for a storybook finish. There wasn’t any other logical reason for that play.
I don’t believe it was a conspiracy, so I’m left with the fact that Kirby made the dumbest call in the history of football."

Actually, NO. The play was there, the exact same play was used in the 2012 SECCG and it worked. Kirby knew the Bama punt safe formation, they haven’t changed apparently. The difference is Ga took to long. Ga got the look from Bama it wanted and Swift was eligible (on the end of the line) bc the two WR were off the line. In 2012, they snapped the ball in less than 5 seconds, on Saturday, they gave Bama enough time to recognize it and you can see Mack Wilson rolling over the top of Swift. Had they not had time to move him, Swift catches it, most likely for a TD, Ga practiced this play all week if they got that look, they got what they wanted, Fields just too long to hike it. Here is the play if Fields hikes it even 5 seconds earlier.

I was there, hated seeing it at the time, but at least with many years of hindsight I can follow his thinking. He was obviously thinking there was no way we prevent them from scoring again,

Here is the dumb fake punt. It’s at 2:46 in this video

I remember this game well. My father was typically pretty vocal during Vol games, but after that play he didn’t say a word for about 3 days. Thanks for the memories.....whew..and we’re dating ourselves.
