Did Kiffin leave the UT football program better off then he found it?

How about NO.

Depth issues are a bigger issue now in some areas, and Dooley has acknowledged that.

If we're going off of W/L record, then, yes, he did. However, I feel we're at about the same place that we were when Kiffycakes was hired.

Should be renamed as "Are The Vols In Better Shape After Last Season's Experience"

The answer is no. The program may have been better the day before he left, but any gains were erased by the turmoil he created by leaving.

were worse off now. OL and DL recruiting took a step back when Kiffin left, which were our two biggest areas of concern.

I think we're better for it. Our entire defense learned from one of the best minds in football. Which sounds better? A defense who learned 3rd and Chavis, or a defense coached by Monte Kiffin?

And as for the offense, we've got many weapons that we didn't have, nor would we have had, if we didn't have the Kiffins. They were able to not only calm down Crompton, but didn't pander to the masses and bench him for the ginger.

All-in-all, we had turmoil that lost us some recruits. The loss in recruits, however, doesn't change what would have happened. Our depth was still going to be a problem, and that can be blamed on the prior staff. We kept many of our players from last year (Jackson, Oku, Teague, etc), and gained many players that we can clearly credit to that staff (Bray, Palardy, etc.). IMO, we don't get either of them without the previous staff.

Part II:

If UT had hired Gruden instead of Dooley to replace Kiffin, would people be saying that?

No,because if he did we would have a O-Line this year and we have depth in places we dont.

he didnt make it better or worse. we would have the same situation with him or Fulmer this year.

the players Kiffin ran off are garbage, so dont play the depth/attrition card either. the state of this program would be poor this year regardless if he had or hadnt left.

I really don't see how any of this makes us better off honestly. They learned a system from a great coach, but that system isn't going to be in place now. The '09 Fulmer class would have been just as good as Kiffin's. What they did with Crompton has zero affect on the future of UT so I'm not sure how that helps us.

Just as good? We don't get Bryce or Janzen, for sure. We also don't get Teague. No way do we end up with a comparable class.
Also, the fact that they didn't go to Stephens helps a lot. It got him off the team. Had he played any significant minutes, he'd still be here plotting world domination on mondays at the Airport Hilton.

the old staff wouldve played the switcheroo game with Crompton and Stephens again last year, which would only result in a dismal year and a very likely losing season. the shear fact that the Kiffin staff chose to stick with and work on Crompton (by whatever means) made the program better for the 2009 season. him leaving though after the season did not make the program better.

Bryce and Janzen are great, but that class would have been a Top 10 class. Stephens didn't transfer because he didn't play last year, he transferred because he wasn't going to play this year. Either way, I really don't feel up to discussing this so I'll agree to disagree.

Well, what I meant was that if he had any serious time last year, he wouldn't have transferred because he'd sadly have a slightly better chance of playing this year. Make sense?

Yes I think the fact he left put us in better shape than we were in. I loved the staff and was all on board while they were here but honestly I had a sigh of relief when it was over. Every week I was waiting for the announcement that he had broken another rule or pissed off someone else. I honestly have faith in CDD I can't say why I just do and thats enough to make me thank CLK for leaving when he did because else wise we might not be "stuck" with Dooley.
