It seems like a few years ago his name would come up about head coaching jobs. I remember after the '01 season distinctly, but do yall think that he has now missed his chance after the disappointing last few years at UT?

I'm not sure Chavis ever wanted to be the head guy. He would have taken that plunge at a small school by now if he did, IMO. FWIW, he loves Tennessee and he and Fulmer are buds. Good salary and job security. Not everybody wants to be THE man.
Chavis is loyal to Coach Fulmer, just like Coach Fulmer is loyal to the Chief. With that said, even though he didnt take a job in 2001, I am sure he is very happy and making a nice living where he is now.
Chavis had a few NFL offers in the '90s for a linebacker coach position. I remember he turned down the Jets because his son was then still at Central High and he didn't want him to have to change schools. I wonder if he could turn back time if he wishes he would have left for the league, with their big paychecks and job security.
I used to go to church with his son John Jr. He did turn down a position with the Colts quite a few years ago. If UT ends up with a D like everyone is used to again (Top 5 in SEC, top 20 in the NCAA) his name will begin popping up again.
Chavis was being considered for the missouri job a few years ago. They were looking at him pretty hard for awhile then things cooled off. I guess he is loyal to fulmer.
