ESPN, while showing Vol highlights of one of the most amazing baseball games in UT's history, wanted to make sure everyone saw Blake Burke (supposedly??) holding back his swing with two strikes and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. (ESPN really loves us, don't they?) Sooooo, what say you Vol Nation?

FSU fans will always think it was a bad call and I don't think we can blame them for feeling that way. But it's also true that If the roles were reversed, they'd be just as happy as we are -- and unapologetic. After all, it the umpire's call and that's the way the game goes. And they'd be right.

It could've gone either way and we were fortunate to be on the good end of it. They still have to live with the fact that they were one out away with a 2-run lead and couldn't seal the deal. What's done is done and it's in the books.

We’re beating a dead horse here at this point. What about the balk call and the bs calls that should’ve been strikes a few times that gave them runners and they ended up scoring?
That balk called made me furious at the time. His pauses were all exactly the same before and after that butt crack call.

Option 2 is wrong and should be worded differently…the rule reads as this…

NCAA 2-39 Half Swing

Half Swing

SECTION 39. An attempt by the batter to stop the forward motion of the bat while swinging, which puts the batter in jeopardy of a strike being called. The half swing shall be called a strike if the barrel head of the bat passes the batter’s front hip. This does not apply to a bunt attempt when the batter pulls the bat back.

Crossing home plate has nothing to do with anything…where do you guys get this nonsense from…lol

And it should never have anything to do with home plate. Not all batters stand at the very back of the batters box, so I can totally agree with the rule.

Not sure. I probably need an angle on the actual third base line to be able to tell.

Dont feel like it was as obvious of a blown call as some would babble about. At worst, thats a 50/50 call and it always has been. Lets not talk about the horrid strike zone we got in the 3rd that led to fsu stacking 5 runs that inning. Easy to pick out this single moment and cry like a bitch that you were robbed. They were robbed by replacing whitaker and the drop in center field

Stop whining about ESPN. It was a huge play in the game.

And it doesn’t get any closer than that.

Knox News: Did Blake Burke swing vs. FSU? Controversial no-swing helps Tennessee to College World Series win

If they choose to write about this - at least get it right, unless I remember incorrectly it was TWO pitches later. Regardless, FSU lost the game because they allowed 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth. Edited to add: I rechecked it was two pitches later - the reporter was too interested in taking away from the Vols win to even make sure this was correct.

One pitch later, Burke would single up the middle to tie the game at 11-11. Tennessee would then walk it off two batters later to hand the Seminoles a 12-11 loss, sending FSU to the "loser's bracket" of the CWS. Florida State entered the eighth inning with an 11-7 lead.
