Earlier this week, I had a dream about Hendon Hooker throwing a deep TD pass to Cedric Tillman against LSU. Tillman didn't get to suit up, but the exact play in my dream happened in the game; except it was Jalin Hyatt instead of Tillman. And it was the opposite side of the field, but whatever ... my dream was close enough! This was a fun game and it was nice winning one big for a change. No stress. All fun!

Quick thoughts this week:

The defense showed up. Best performance by the defense all season. To be sure, LSU's offense is no world-beater, but neither was Florida's before they played us. Our secondary has been awful for much of the season and they looked so much better yesterday. Still far from perfect, but they did not give up nearly as many big plays this week and forced Jayden Daniel to make more 'perfect passes' to move the ball. While we put up 40 points this week, I felt like the offense caught a lot of breaks, and this win was the first one where you could say the D played a bigger role than the offense. And we finally got a lot of critical 3rd down stops; something we failed to do much against Florida.

Sacks and TFLs. Byron Young had 2.5 sacks. We had 5 sacks total. Roman Harrison 1.5 TFLs. That defensive front is looking great!

Special Teams! We've also had some Special Teams miscues this season, but not yesterday. Special teams played great. Other than a very slight miss on a 50-yard FG by Chase McGrath, special teams had a great day.

Bru McCoy and Jabari Small. Bru McCoy also showed up big time. McCoy had a career day and bullied LSU defenders around with 7 receptions for 140 yards. Jabari Small had one of his best showings ever with 22 carries for 127 yards.

Hendon Hooker had a "B" game. Hooker played well, and came through when it mattered as always, but did struggle mightily in that 2nd Quarter after getting clobbered by an LSU defender. Felt like he was off after that and started making a lot of mistakes, but got it back together in the 2nd Half. Not complaining, Hooker played a good game, and it's actually encouraging that he didn't have to be Superman this week for us to win big.

Penalties cleaned up. Think we had a false start early in the 2nd half, but I can't remember any others; we shot ourselves in the foot too many times early in the season, but we're getting better.

Heupel outcoached Brian Kelly. And it wasn't even close. Heupel coached an "A" game and stayed one step ahead of LSU's defense throughout the game. If we didn't have quite a few execution failures in the 2nd Quarter, this would've been an even bigger blowout; could've easily been a 54-13 game. Brian Kelly was bad. That 4th and 10 call was one of the worst I've seen. What did they have to gain from that? Even if they convert, they still might be outside of FG range. A completely dangerous decision that served no real function. Just punt it and try to make Tennessee drive 90 yards with 0 timeouts in 30 seconds. Even with our O, we're probably just taking a knee and going to halftime. Instead he gave us 3 points and he's lucky we didn't get 7 there.

We caught all the breaks. This was an impressive win, but let's not get carried away. Unlike the Pitt and Florida games where the luck went against us, we caught all the breaks in this one. LSU fumbles the opening kickoff, which lets us jump up 7-0. Then we have two very bad fumbles, but recover both of them. Both of those fumbles could have been disastrous.

Game was closer than score indicated, but we were better team. Take away LSU's blunders and our good fortune (recovering some bad fumbles) and this is a much closer game, but I still think we were the better team. We controlled the line of scrimmage, took advantage of their defensive weaknesses, put the kibosh on their offense. While we caught some breaks, we also played far from a perfect game and the score could've been even more lopsided.

We did it all without our #1 Receiver. Every team has injuries, but losing your #1 WR is pretty big for most teams. We've managed to pull off 2 big wins in spite of it.

Where should we be ranked? I know some people on here want us higher. I'd probably put us at #7. The LSU win was impressive, but everyone above us currently, with the exception of USC, has just as impressive wins on their resume. And USC's schedule is paper-soft this year; out of the top 10 teams, they feel like the least proven.

We have a shot. This is the best I've felt about our odds against Bama in 15 years. This will be our toughest game this season, especially if Bryce Young is back. I am, by no means, predicting a win. But for the first time in forever, it feels like we have a chance. If we clean up our mistakes and play like we did yesterday, we have a legit shot this year.

5-0! Win or lose next week, I'm enjoying a 5-0 start and a blowout win over LSU!

GBO!

Great analysis, per usual!

I think the secondary play was exponentially improved yesterday. This is the first game this season where we had DBs in their back pocket on almost every route and some of those completions were just perfect passes or great plays by the WR. Heck even Jeremy Banks got himself a pass break up if I remember correctly!

Great summary

I'm curious if insertion of juco DB Dee Williams (I think that's his name) into the secondary was like the glue that allows the DBs to settle down. I know that as long as they are improving, I can't be to hard on them.

Oh boy Dee as a return man has me so happy. Made me believe I can wait on squirrel being inserted.

I respectfully disagree... this game was not as close as the score indicated.

LSU ran for like 50 yards the entire game and 25% of their passing yards came on the final drive, when we were clearly just trying to finish the game.

LSU was whipped about as thoroughly as a team can be yesterday.

Nice analysis, DG, thanks for it.

I agree with just about all your points, but must take exception to one:
Where should we be ranked? I know some people on here want us higher. I'd probably put us at #7. The LSU win was impressive, but everyone above us currently, with the exception of USC, has just as impressive wins on their resume.
This actually isn't true.

Consider the two "best wins" of each team in the Top 10:

#1 Bama best wins: 49-26 over #20 Arkansas (now unranked), 24-20 over A&M
#2 UGa best wins: 49-3 over #11 Oregon (now #12), 48-7 over USCe
#3 Ohio St best wins: 21-10 over #5 Notre Dame (now unranked), 52-21 over Wisconsin
#4 Michigan best wins: 27-14 over Iowa, 31-10 over Indiana
#5 Clemson best wins: 30-20 over #10 NC State (now #14), 51-45 over #21 Wake Forest (now #15)
#6 USCw best wins: 30-14 over Washington St, 17-14 over Oregon St
#7 Oklahoma St best wins: 36-25 over #16 Baylor (now unranked), 41-31 over Texas Tech
#8 Tennessee best wins: 40-13 over #25 LSU, 34-27 over #17 Pitt (now unranked) (no, didn't forget then-#20 FL; but Pitt was ranked higher)
#9 Ole Miss best wins: 22-19 over #7 Kentucky (about to be unranked), 42-0 over Georgia Tech
#10 Penn St best wins: 41-12 over Auburn, 17-7 over Northwestern

I highlighted in green the wins that stand out in retrospect, knowing how the opponents stand halfway through the season (Tennessee is more about quantity; 3 Top 25 wins is the most of anyone on this list, probably of anyone in college football this year). Also highlighted in red the weakest sets of accomplishments.

As you can see, Michigan has played absolutely no one of note; neither has Ohio State, but at least they had the good style to hang 50+ on one of them, and the other was (hilariously wrong) ranked in the Top 10 when they played.

If we could somehow ignore the past, forget our expectations coming into the season, and then look dispassionately at this list of wins, I think most folks would re-rank the Top 10 something like this:

1. Clemson
2. UGa
3. Tennessee
4. Bama
5. Ole Miss
6. Oklahoma St
7. Ohio St
8. Penn St
9. USCw
10. Michigan

Certainly the AP poll voters' mid-western mafia would never allow that to happen, and the Bama-UGa momentum of reputation wouldn't, either.

But based on accomplishments to date, that's a more sensible Top 10 than we actually have.

Thanks again for your run-down, appreciate it.

Go Vols!

After rewatching the game this morning; I think Tennessee did what they should have done to a bad team on the road. LSU football is a mess right now in all 3 phases of the game. This game certainly could have gone differently but that LSU team was overrated and probably isn’t even top 40 in reality. I don’t want to take away from what the team did because our boys played great but I’m pumping the brakes on my excitement.

I don’t believe the Vols have played their best game yet. Couple passes to wide open receivers and we might have hung 60. D backs played better and LSU was throwing the ball a lot. We stuffed the run they had 55 yards rushing, 38 from Daniels. We had a LB spying on him all day. Garner best damn D line coach in NCAA. Kudos Vols.

Overall, a good analysis as always ... but I don't think you are giving Hendon Hooker his just due with that "B" grade. Reminds me of a hard a$$ Calculus instructor I had on the Hill in the fall of '93.

When was the last time a Tennessee QB dropped a dime like this against quality competition?

I think voters will put us ahead of Ok St. They will keep USCw and Clemson ahead of us. SC because of the brand. Clemson because of recency bias.

I think you are correct. The offense wasn’t hitting on all cylinders and we still hung 40 on them. (We were fortunate that none of our 3 fumbles weren’t recovered by LSU.) If the offense ever plays a perfect game, look out. As for the defense, they looked better. The secondary was improved but a stout pass rush against a depleted LSU O line certainly helped that situation. If Bryce Young plays, we’ll find out quickly how much improvement they’ve made. For the first time in about 15 years, I feel like we have a good shot at stopping another streak.

Great analysis. I agree with your assessment of Hooker after the sack. He was very obviously in pain after the hit. His passes were off a little after that, but as you said, he corrected it in the second half.

Bryce Young will be trying to protect his shoulder and will not be nearly as effective throwing the ball. He can still run, but he will slide quicker now to try to keep from getting re-injured. VOLS win this one. Time to break out the Tennessee Whiskey and celebrate (not cigars).

Good overall summary. I don’t think the game was ever really close. We had more breaks go our way but that’s football and it’s good to see us on the positive side. We won in every imaginable way.

It helped that we jumped out to an early lead and it forced them to play from behind. Really difficult to beat us when we start out with a big lead. Made their offense more predictable.

That said, they had opportunities to get back in and our defense won the important battles.

You might be right, but they have the talent of a top 15 team, but they certainly haven't played to their potential. From a talent perspective, though, LSU is a better team than Florida. Napier did a much better job coaching against us than Brian Kelly.

I'm trying to recall the exact circumstance but there was a terrible decision on a kickoff/return. The receiver mishandled a low kick then compounded the error by running the ball out of the end zone. He was being coached up afterward so hopefully gets corrected.

I generally agree with your assessment of Hookers game. There were 2 back-to-back series where he was late on a wide open receiver on the side line then threw behind 2 wide open receivers. Maybe a B+ at best.
