I'll never forget one particular play from a UK-AUB game when Chuck was a freshman - Turpin posted up Barkley, who rejected the shot, then grabbed the rebound and went coast to coast for a slam dunk. I've never seen anything like it before or since.
Seeing guys like Barkley, Dominique Wilkins, Vern Fleming, Jeff Malone, Ennis Whatley, Jeff Turner, and Carlos Clark come through Stokley in those years was incredible. The SEC was still a step below the ACC, Big 10, and Big East then, but there were some great players and future pros throughout the league.
I remember TN playing Minnesota when we were off on winter break ( the school calendar was in Quarters back then), this was either Devoe’s first or second year. MN had a skinny post named Kevin McHale that wore us out, but their top player was Trent Tucker ( who also had a long NBA career). I remember Randy Breuer was a 7’2 freshman on their bench. We barely won in a slugfest, Reggie Johnson had a big game.
