Derek Mason hired at Vandy

I was more concerned about them getting Chad Morris. Not a bad hire, but it'll be interesting to see the staff he assembles this late.

On paper it looks like the best Vandy could of done. Nice hire to be honest. Still this recruiting class is in shambles and they are sorely lacking in the talent department (this is not going to be better), and 2013 will be looked back upon as their best in recent history. They will be lucky to make it to a bowl in 2015.

Good luck to those arrogant pricks. Morris was the much better option. Mason is underwhelming.

Mason has experience recruiting to a high-level academic program. While not an overly exciting hire, I think Vandy made a pretty good call.

Not very impressive. Mason has been a coordinator for two years total. Never a head coach on any level and never held any position in the South.

Where are his recruiting ties to the SE? I doubt he has any. I could recruit at Vandy saying the whole "40 years to 4" over and over again.

I don't know. I think its a pretty solid hire. I am sure he will get asst coaches with connections to the South.

Neither did James Franklin, but I agree Mason can be a hit or miss hire. I think the talent gap is going to be the biggest issue.

It won't be hard for Mason to find some assistants who have recruited the South before. The fact that he hasn't is way overblown.

There's a difference between assistants who have recruited the south and assistants that know and have connections in the south. He won't be able to find the latter.

Yes he will. You don't think there are a bunch of CUSA or Sun Belt coaches who've established relationships with high schools in the South? Or a bunch of former SEC assistants who are looking for jobs? Or some coaches currently filling back office jobs who'd like to get on the sideline? Heck, there may be a few ACC position coaches who'd like to join the big leagues.

You are talking out of your rear end when you say that he can't find coaches with connections.

Their defense should be solid

If he runs that 3-4 defense it will take time for them to be solid. Not only do they not have the athletes as we all know it takes time to learn that defense. He will need at least 2-3 years to recruit enough players for that defense.

Next if they run a similar offense as Stanford I hope their O-lineman beef up

Stanford assistant coach. RT @sbterry247: Sources tell @247Sports that Derek Mason will soon be named #Vanderbilt head coach.

I don't love this.

Not sure about this hire. Shaw is more of an offensive coach, correct? If so, that Stanford D has been nasty the last couple years under Mason.
