Per Chris Low of Volquest:

Tennessee has released its updated depth chart heading into the opener against Cal, and the biggest news is that freshman Eric Berry is not listed as one of the starters at cornerback. Marsalous Johnson and Antonio Gaines are listed as the two starters.

Other noteworthy items on the depth chart include Ramon Foster as the starter at right tackle and Chris Scott as the starter at right guard.

Arian Foster and Lucas Taylor are listed as the first-team kickoff returners, even though freshman Denarius Moore has worked with the first unit the last few days back there.

Jonathan Hefney is listed as the first-team punt returner and freshman Dennis Rogan the second-team punt returner.

The top three receivers listed are Austin Rogers, Josh Briscoe and Taylor.

Senior Jarod Parrish is listed as the No. 1 strong safety, with Nevin McKenzie backing him up.

I'm not going to be too upset for a few reasons:

1. It is a week from the Cal game and things may change.
2. It was said that Berry may still start, even though not listed as a starter.
3. Berry will play more than any other CB either way.
4. Moore(mainly), O'Neal, Vinson, and Berry have all got 1st team reps at KO. Most likely will see Moore deep.

I think he does too. Hubbs said last week that he wouldn't be surprised if Berry starts but is bracketed by Gaines and Johnson on the chart.

I'll never understand why Foster is returning kickoffs.

1) He doesn't have breakaway speed
2) He's our starting runningback
3) He doesn't have breakaway speed
4) We have so many guys who have that extra gear and can be game changers....O'Neal, Berry, Vinson,
5) He doesn't have breakaway speed

I like Foster, don't get me wrong...I think he'll be a good "Troy Fleming" like runningback in the NFL...but I think having him return kickoffs is nuts.

i just think they have prepared the depth chart like this to throw Cal off... We're gonna throw Rogers, Briscoe and Taylor out there first and then the next thing u know we got O'neal Vinson and Jones coming out of the gates breaking ankles and hearts

And it is not as if he is Mr. Sure Hands.

I think Kenny O'Neal should get a shot before Foster. As long as Lucas Taylor can hold on to the ball, I can handle him back there. If he muffs or fumbles it...:banghead2:

This is dumb - Berry has done everything he can to earn a starting job and he has earned it... Fulmer just needs to get over the fact that some of these guys are freshmen.

Moore should be the #3 receiver over Briscoe IMO - I didn't even think Briscoe was in the top 4.

I don't even think Briscoe should be on the travel squad. Maybe he can prove to us fans why he is on it come Sept. 1.

Brent Hubbs was at the Big Orange Club meeting Thursday. He said it was neck and neck with Berry. Berry is the real deal, but he is in a fight for the starter's role. IF Marsalous starts, Berry will get a lot of time. Really, who gives a dang? If they are both there, why should we care? If Hubbs says they are neck and neck, how can you say Berry earned it? He has a helluva future with us at CB as does Marsalous. Let them fight it out and make each other better. Crying about who starts before the first game is played is kinda anal IMO as the only thing that is important is putting a team on the field that gives us a chance to win. I don't care if they're all named Smith, give me the best.

Berry has seen no time on the field, has had less time to learn schemes and coverages and has the right to be inserted slowly in order to give him the best chance to develope confidence and give him the ability to really look at the game from field level. I know Marsalous doesn't have a lot more experience than Berry but why **** can him because Berry was a 5* and is the new toy in the toy box?

First of all - The only reason Berry isn't starting is because he is a freshman at this point. You obviously don't pay very much attention because Antonio Gaines has been horrible (very slow) every time he took the field (which wasn't much). The two best players to start would be Johnson and Berry. Fulmer has admitted atleast 100 times that Berry has grasped the schemes and coverages faster than nearly anyone he's coached so that doesn't seem to be the problem.

hvwarrior, are Richard and McClendon listed as guards or tackles on the depth chart? Whoare the other 3 second teamer on the O-line? Thanks.

Richards and McClendon are both Guards. I heard the Richards might get some looks at Center though. Both are going to be beasts, hopefully by the Fla game.

Just repeating what Hubbs said. I'm not there everyday and frankly don't care who the starters are until they line up on the field. Hubbs says he's at every practice so i gave him some credit for knowing something.

We have to be honest with ourselves though. As bad as some UT fans think our staff is, they're still a helluva lot smarter than we are. That may sting a little bit, but at least they get to see the kids in person and see things in quite more depth than we do.
