He really didn't piggyback anyone else's success at Grand Valley State or Central Michigan. Could he turn out to be a guy who gets to the bigtime and is over his head? Certainly. However, my gut tells me he's a whole lot closer to Jim Tressel than he is to John L. Smith.I don't know much about Kelly other than to look at his resume. I like what see there, obviously, yet somehow I can't shake the nagging feeling that he's largely reaping the benefits of what Mark Dantonio built there. This is a non-issue, right?
Sometimes, an AD has to realize it's not about winning a press conference, it's about winning championships.John L. Smith is exactly the kind of guy I'm thinking about. I want the guy who built the program, not the guy who's currently warming the seat. Central Michigan is good, though -- I hadn't realized how putrid the Chippewas were before he got there until I just now looked it up.
If this turns out to be true, this strikes me as a good, solid hire for Hamilton -- at a time when the natives are not exactly looking for the solid up and comer. Seems like a bit of a risky move for Hamilton, considering all the ESPN money that he has to play with.
that all indications are that Brian Kelly is the next coach at the University of Tennessee.
Assume for a minute that is true. First off, Dantonio recruited players to run a power/Big Ten offense... Kelly turned them into a spread team. Next, we have to assume that most of the 4 qbs he has played this year were all fitted to play in Dantonio's system. OK... he's played 4 qb's and has them on the verge of winning a BCS conference. Tennessee can't even get it's top 2 qb's prepared to beat Wyoming or UCLA (lucky to get out alive against NIU)...I don't know much about Kelly other than to look at his resume. We would agree that there are plenty of candidates out there that could do better than this slop we have this year. I was just addressing the concerns about Kelly just winning with Dantonio's players...I'm not dissing Kelly, but if the goal is to get better results than 2008, I've got a list of about 500 candidates for you.
