It was easy to discern when that was originally put up. The gamethreads can get atrocious but we kind of gave up on the gamethreads but enforce it elsewhere pretty tight. And we don’t argue about it either. That’s part of the problem.Well, #1 is already down the drain. But there’s a difference between stating facts and bashing.
My understanding was they could not earn money in the US on a student visa so the only other readily available although not easy to obtain is a work visa where they were actively employed. The "answer" may be driven by the determination that student-athletes are employees of the University. There are any number of ancillary matters that are going to be affected by that determination. For example, taxation of the value of a scholarshp, worker's compensation status, and student vs work visa elgibility, just to name a few.
Jim
I think you are correct in that understanding. But, what I'm suggesting is that the determination that student-athletes are "employees" of their University is going to be in direct conflict with the provisions of a student visa. And, frankly, I see no way to exempt foreign students from the ruling regarding employee status. My understanding was they could not earn money in the US on a student visa so the only other readily available although not easy to obtain is a work visa where they were actively employed.
It’s been explained. They can earn money outside the US, as long as the NIL contract is set up that way. It’s been done and passed the sniff test from the Feds.I think you are correct in that understanding. I may not being clear in my explanation. I am not just talking about the ability of a student-athlete to enter contracts for use of their NIL. The House decision, as I understand it, means that student-athletes are employees of the University. This would mean that a student visa would not be available for foreign students under that scenario and will either require them to obtain a work visa or some modification of the current visa provisions. It’s been explained. Could be wrong but I don't think it's final that athletes will be employees of the University, even when they're on salary. The schools are fighting that designation bc of everything else it will bring with it.I may not being clear in my explanation. Such deals are renegotiated for the time after school. I'm pretty sure. Some for pro sports, some as influencers, etc. The school doesn't pay NIL, anyway. The money is from businesses, who don't have to follow any NIL rules after school. It's between the former athlete (and maybe an agent) and the business, like any other case of advertising or endorsements. These players are keeping their existing endorsements into their pro careers, and with increasing popularity of the sport have a very high ceiling in coming years.

The companies sponsoring the NIL $ the LSU player gets could def follow them to the pros. Wouldn't have to go thru the collective anymore. Rickea did videos for that Starry Drink both here and in LA.You're saying, just for example, the LSU collective is continuing to pay former LSU players after they graduate?

Some schools are, some are not. It’s like Clemson in CFB, they refuse to play the portal/NIL game, it’s hurting them obviously. In WBB the top 25-30 players command some kind of NIL commitment, from a school collective to start with, it’s just how it works now. Yeah, Nico cashed in big time, prob over time those kinds of deals will level out, maybe. There is individual NIL which can follow you.
The money pooled in collectives generally does not.
For example the the $8m Nico is getting ain't happening once he leaves Knoxville. Same thing is happening to a lesser extent in wcbb.
We are in the NIL game for hs wbb players now.
Dak Prescott became the highest paid qb just before the season started. Perception…Jerry Jones’ perception, but still. Some schools are, some are not. Chuck, once you get to the pros it is different. Dak was never close to the best QB in the NFL, but the Cowboys made him so monetarily because they could not easily replace him. Timing is everything in the pros, when a contract is coming due, the good players have leverage which is not the case in college ball in the absence of contracts except for those cases (to a much lesser degree) where a player is choosing a school or transferring.Dak Prescott became the highest paid qb just before the season started. I was more pointing out the fallacy of NIL cost leveling out.Chuck, once you get to the pros it is different. It has exploded over at the baseball forum since I joined up about five years ago. I’ve recently lived through the deluge of drive-bys and trolls. Won’t be long until the gamethreads here will be insufferable, but I’ve got a refuge.I have been on this site for what, over ten years now, why did I never realize there are so few posters here, damn. “You are killing me smalls.”
Fixing to get plenty busy around here in these parts this season, watch it happen Chuck.
If we are right, this site is going to explode this season. All of the FB/BB and baseball fans will be dropping in. I expect it will get busy again around here Chuckie. Just give it a little time, they all remember which team at UT has the most championships and once it starts rolling again they will jump on the wagon. It has exploded over at the baseball forum since I joined up about five years ago.
