*We’ve made a ton of progress to this point in learning the system compared to a year ago. We’ve obviously got some new guys in the program. But we’re definitely ahead of where we were a year ago.
*I think Tyler Baron has had a good camp for us. Tamarion McDonald has done a good job, along with Jaylen McCollough and Trevon Flowers. Byron Young has taken another step. We’re excited to see all of those guys.
*Banks on #Vols’ DB starters: Obviously, we have some veterans in the secondary who have played a lot. But all of those guys have been interchangeable throughout the fall. We feel pretty good that McDonald, Flowers and McCollough will be out there.
*I think Tamarion McDonald has always been a talented kid. Every snap he took last year was an investment, and now he’s starting to see the fruit from that. We’re excited about him. He’s a big-bodied kid who can run. We think he has a chance to be a good player for us.
*Kamal Hadden has really worked hard. We’re excited to see him play next week. Christian Charles has been a warrior. His overall grasp of the package has improved greatly. Both of those guys are going to contribute.
*Banks on DB rotation: We’re going to play guys. Like I told them in the first meeting, you get what you deserve. We feel like we’ve made some strides in that area to develop some depth, but we’ll see next Thursday night who’s ready to go.
*We’re excited about Joshua Josephs and James Pearce. Those guys have been as good as advertised in terms of their athleticism and length. We anticipate them playing. I think they’ll contribute. How much? We’ll see. But we’re counting on those guys.
*I feel a ton better about the LB depth, to be honest. Juwan Mitchell has a better grasp of the defense. He’s been good. I think he’s in a good place. But with Jeremy Banks, Beasley, “Pakk” Garland and Page, we have enough guys to keep guys fresh.
*We like Wesley Walker a ton. Andre Turrentine is a bit younger, so he’s working his way through it, like most freshmen. Walker has a little bit more of a veteran mentality. We expect him to contribute, really have a chance to help this defense.

Will be interested in his take after the first 3 games.
I think some of the new guys will become really good players. By mid October, we should be hitting our stride on defense and the offense should be at full steam. I look forward to see how this team progresses. This will be a team which will make us proud.

I agree and am optimistic with Banks wanting to play more guys. Obviously he likes what he’s seen in fall camp. I hope he’s just as optimistic 1/4th of the way into the season! Would bode well for the SEC games.

CTB had a rough go of it last season after losing so many players via the portal. We recruited well and got a few key transfers. I'm thinking us fans will see a much improved defense from the git-go and even more improvement mid-season when several good freshmen get acclimated to our system....GO BIG ORANGE !!!

I am excited to see the defense.

I think it will be vastly improved over last season, especially at LB and the secondary.

I think folks underrate how much of a difference jumping from year 1 to year 2 can make with this defense. Just from a pure understanding standpoint, it's huge. Look at what Ole Miss did last year after being terrible in Kiffin's first year.

Edit: I looked it up: Ole Miss went from last in the SEC in scoring defense at 38.3 ppg in 2020 to 8th in the SEC in scoring defense at 25 ppg in 2021. That's without changing DCs. Tennessee gave up 27.5 ppg last year.

From this fan’s perspective, we seemed to compete pretty well on 1st and 2nd down last year but gave up way too many 3rd and long conversions and big plays in general. I like the effort and we did come through a couple of times when I didn’t think we had a chance; the end of the Kentucky game stands out in this regard. The D doesn’t have to pitch shutouts, just limit the big plays and get off the field when you get to 3rd and 8>! To do that, we need more depth, more consistent play from the corners, better contain of the opposing QB on scramble plays, and most importantly more QB pressure with just the front 4. Get us 3-4 more opposing team punts per game than in ’21 and with this offense we win 9-10 games.

Pakk Garland is a player I noticed that that has turned into a physical specimen. Put him in on 3rd and short and rbs will be doing anything to run in whatever hole Pakk isn’t in.

It is hard to make a negative judgement on the defense based on the end of the Kentucky game. The defense played at least 100 snaps in that game. That is more than most defenses play in two games! With a very thin lineup and attrition during the game, it was amazing that we actually had 11 players standing at the end of that game. Coach Banks barely had a cupboard, little less a full one. I don't think the players were able to cope with the pace and number of snaps our offense forces the defense to play. There are not a lot of Butlers that can handle it.

Yeah, that's pretty much my point. The Wildcats had been running the ball down our throats all day and just when it looked like our D was gassed with the game on the line they manned up and got a stop to preserve the victory. Last years D had a lot of issues, playing their guts out wasn't one of them. Looking forward to seeing where they improve this year!

I'm going to reluctantly join the crowd in being optimistic about a defensive turnaround this season. I know being a coordinator for a defense on Hypeul's teams has to be a monumental task. With that said, I have not been overly impressed with Tim Banks to this point. We need to improve tremendously for me to believe he is the right guy for the job.

Hard to critique the guy for last year after losing so many guys to the portal the year before and having to work with what he had. Our defense wasn’t THAT bad on 1st and 2nd downs they were just THAT bad on 3rd downs which caused them to be on the field a lot longer. We actually led the nation in TFLs for a good portion of the year last year but struggled mightily on 3rd down. Hopefully added depth this year helps with guys being more fresh

Fair points.

I'm not totally down on the guy and I'm still holding out hope. I was more disappointed in players seeming like they were out of position at times, ceding long yardage after catches and runs because our players assumed someone else was going to make the tackle or the ball carrier was running out of bounds.... there were numerous times when our defense costed us big that didn't have anything to do with a lack of talent.

I'm also probably in the minority that don't like his interviews and press conferences. He uses the word "obviously" about 30 times during one session and never seems to address a specific question. For someone who uses the word so much, I guess I just assume he'd have it figured out.

I'm hoping for a turnaround, just not sold on him yet. Go vols.

Hopefully the D will get off the field and 3 and stupid long instead of letting the offense get a 1st down
Will be exciting to see the improvements
