Our defense has been slow coming out of the gate in the last two games. Very, very poor tackling. In the first quarter of these games, our defense has looked terrible. The opposing offenses have run over, around, and through use. Making us look real bad. In last nights game it cost 14 points before we started playing tough.
Why is our D playing so bad in the first quarter?.
Yea, we have managed to pull off two wins but, with tougher opponents coming up, i`m afraid this first quarter blas may make the difference between a win or a loss.
Am I the only one noticing this?.

Even Helen Keller saw this. They have to tackle better and be ready to go from the first play.

no you're not and Butch said as much after the game...hard to figure the reason, but these are 18-22 year old young men, not light switches...gotta do better though...getting behind early playing the Gators might not work out as well as last night...

GO VOLS!

Sorry, all of these guys know how to tackle. We don't recruit players who have trouble tackling. I don't think they have done enough real hitting and hard tacking in this fall practice 9trying to keep them healthy) and this was the first time anyone has seen the VT offense under this coach. No film to study. I liked the adjustments that were made.

Most of it is diving instead of wrapping up. That run by Evans in the first was horrible diving tackle attempts

Not sure about knowing how to tackle. I watch lots of other games and see many, many form tackles being made by players all over the field. Many beautiful one on one open field tackles. We seem to try knocking people down outside and do lots of arm tackling inside. Not drive them down.

Defense didn't play well yardage wise but half of it came in the first quarter. Need us to play better in the beginning of games but I do love us ripping at the ball and forcing 2 of the 5 fumbles. Yes VT is fumble prone but a good job of us taking the ball away. Turnovers won us the game. Lots to work on in the yardage portion. Stopping big runs, better tackling etc.

Turnovers won us at least 3 games in 1998 - Florida, Auburn, and Arkansas. Auburn and Florida killed us yardage wise, but the scoreboard is all that matters at the end of the day. We looked just as bad offensively in 1998 after the first 2 games when compared to this year. Actually 3 of our first 4 games, the offense was not looking good at all.

AGAIN our defense allowed us to score 31 points unanswered, not too shabby when having to make adjustments on the fly with a new offensive guru on their side of the field.

The run d is not looking good and some of these blitzes are pathetic. The corner runs in and then just stops when he's met by a blocker, doesn't even put much effort in to try and get by him. I think by Flroida they will be locked in.
