Defense, why is it so bad?

this from CPF media day off UTSPORTS......
“A lot of teams will take their defensive front and fill a gap and hold the offensive lineman and let the linebackers run and make all the plays. If that’s what we need to get down to doing, we’ll do that. But that hasn’t been our style here, and I expect those guys to make more plays.

and don't get me wrong, i'm not trying to let them off the hook.....nothing has worked with any consistency.....they need to do something else......simply lining up and trying to beat the guy in front of you isn't working.

i think that in a nutshell is what's wrong with our defense.

Personnel and coaching, as i stated way back at the beginning of this thread.

If the key to stopping the passing game is to apply more QB pressure, then why isn't UT's offense more productive?

UT has given up fewer sacks then anyone, Ainge has had lots of time but the offense hasn't put up enough points 3 times this year.

There's more needed then pressure on the QB IMO. UT's philosophy is to not allow any big plays on defense, and the short passing game has really hurt them. Seems like its time to gamble and take away the short passing game, and force teams to beat UT with the long pass.

The secondary is playing one senior and then every other player in the secondary is in their first year on campus. Not a big fan of Slade but you cant blame all that on him. I doubt any secondary coach in the nation could do too much under these circumstances.

Less speed than normal from the DE position. I think we have some young players (Martin/Walker) to remedy this in the next couple years. But, for this season the only DE in the rotation that provides the speed we need at DE is Ayers. This lack of speed at DE obviously contributes to the difficulty in the secondary.

I think those are two biggest reasons for our difficulty on defense. Has coaching overcome these problems? No. But, you can't just blame it solely on the coaches. These defensive coaches have coached some top shelf defenses. They did not completely forget how to coach. I do think they have done a poor job of adjusting to the offensive adjustments other teams are making at halftime.

take that one step further to adjusting the scheme to the talent they do have and just getting them to do the basics.....get off blocks and tackle.

So our problems at DE is they are not taught how to get off blocks. Thats the problem. We just need to teach them. I mean if they taught me, at 155 pounds, the proper fundamentals to shed blocks then I could do that? Again, we taught the same fundamentals to DT's and DE's that are playing well in the NFL. As a DE you need a quickness and speed gear that Mitchell, Reynolds, and Brown do not have.

The reason we are worse than usual is because of talent. I don't think there is any disputing that.

Of course, as good as Chavis says Slade is, I have never ever been impressed with out secondary even when we were loaded. Heck, even in the mid to late 90s we got shredded by plenty of good passing teams.

My question is, how good does the talent have to be in order to field a competitive team? Certainly we don't have the 90th most talented defense in Div I-A; whether or not we're close to as good as normal. That's my problem.

But I digress...it's talent.

Philosophy, scheme, and in game coaching in that order. I think the same guys if they wore Auburn uniforms and played for Muschamp would be one of the better D's in the SEC.

Injuries to some key DB's.
No pass rush.
Conservative coaching....12-15 yrd cushion to the receivers.
