Defense, why is it so bad?

No pass rush. Number 1 problem.
agreed. and i think there's some scheme issues with how/when we blitz, and also, we don't have anyone in the front 7 that resembles some of the guys we've had up there in the past. put those two together, and this is what you get.

I dont like the scheme against spread teams. When UT has played a team with 4 or 5 WR the defense has looked terrible, i.e. Cal, Florida, Alabma, etc. When UT plays a traditional offense like GA or SC the defense has had some success.

I think the 4-3-4 base defense against spread teams isnt effective. I would rather see Tennessee use a 3-3-5 or 4-2-5 most of the game.

Technique (no form tackles whatsoever all arm tackles) and not adjusting at the half (coaching).

Both of those are coaching mistakes. Another thing is a lack of a primetime badass DL. In order for this, or any, defense to work, the front 4 needs at least one guy to demand a double team. When that isn't there, the defense falters.

So pretty much personnel and coaching as jakez4ut says.

how about crappy defensive calls. no inside or outside pressure, we give a huge cushion to the recievers. I miss the days when we would jam the hell out of the recievers.

Yep. We don't have a single DE that scares anyone in terms of pure out pass rushing ability. Just plain slow. For some reason I keep thinking Ayers has the most potential, but even he is not up to the players of years past.

I would like to see them put Mayo in as a rush DE in passing situations. I think he could be a little like Leonard Little used to be. The DE we have now have no ability to get around the end. Plus he can't cover his shadow on pass plays.

that was my thought coming out of last season......he's been good at times this year, nothing so consistent that i'd say he's been great though.

Everytime I go to post something intelligent or insightful, it seems you have already posted everything I was going to say or you post it while I'm typing.

Yea but is it Chavis not blitzing or our guys?

The defense blitzed plenty of times in the SC game, but even I could tell exactly where the blitz was coming from just about every time. SC easily picked it up most of the time.

They did against UGA.

How much pressure can you get against a team with a short passing game and against a QB using a 3 step drop? For most of those teams, the QB releases the ball pretty quick. I agree Tenn needs to drop the zone and play tighter coverage.
