It's interesting to see a coaches philosophy over time. Billy Donovan is a good one to start with because he's been at one place for so long. College Reference started keeping points per game and offensive points allowed seventeen years ago.

Notice the drop in offensive points over the years and the decline in points allowed. You can literally see the sacrifice on the offensive end to lower the points on the defensive end.

The margin between the two is also of importance, being poor on the offensive end despite the good defensive numbers doesn't get you into, or deeper into the tournament...look at Donovan's national championship years. Look at the years he didn't make the tourney.

This year's Gator team is the second best defense in terms of points allowed and on offense, they are scoring the least amount of points per game of any UF team Donovan has coached. AND They rolled the SEC.

How about last year's champ Louisville, who could be on our dance card? Let's check out Pitino's numbers...one must remember that Louisville was not Pitino's first go round and his numbers at UK aren't available, even still...his best defense won the title last year. His Elite 8 loss in 2007-08...those numbers are very similar to Martin's this year.

Speaking of UK, and since we might have to play them again...his Championship at UK also happens to be the best defensive team.

Coach Martin has put together, by these numbers, the best defense we've had in the last 17 years. When you hear comments like defensive DNA, it's easy to understand the disconnect that may have occurred...defending at a high level takes effort, not something that was engrained by the former coach. Yet even Pearl's Elite 8 was his best defensive team, despite being his 5th best offensive team.

And as for Michigan...

Sets up to be a good game and if we can get past Michigan...meh...one game at a time...GBO!

And just for fun, a guy I really respect as a coach, Tom Izzo...His lone National Title...2nd best defense in terms of points allowed...the team that ranked 1st in least points allowed was also his worst offensive team over the seventeen year period.

Good post 66. Florida is the best defensive team I have had multiple chances of seeing in several years. They are relentless, and that defense is my main reason for picking them as my champ in my bracket. MSU and Louisville are two of my other three FF teams. All defensive-minded.

How does this year's 'Zona team compare to those others "by the numbers?"

They (Arizona) are my other FF team. Their numbers, both offensively and defensively closely mirror Tennessee's.

Arizona:
Off.- 73.1 ppg, 38.9 rpg, 15.1 apg, 46.8% FG%
Def.- 58.3 ppg, 26.3 rpg, 4.2 bpg, 5.9 spg

Tennessee:
Off.- 71.3 ppg, 38.8 rpg, 12.6 apg, 44.7% FG%
Def.- 61.4 ppg, 25.1 rpg, 4.8 bpg, 5.2 spg

I would have lost a lot of money earlier this season if someone had bet me that UT would average more blocks than Arizona, in the tourney. Wow

Those are actually season averages. Not tourney averages.

Yep...things get turned up at tourney time, I heard an interesting stat on the radio today...Richardson is averaging 9 more points in the tourney than his regular season average...that's very much a weapon if he can continue imo.

Yes, he is avg 19.3 ppg in the tourney, which is 9.2 more than his season avg of 10.1.

More interesting is how much those three games have driven up his season avg. Throw them out, and his season avg was 9.2 ppg prior to the NCAA tourney. So, he is actually averaging more than 10 ppg more per game in the NCAA tourney than his pre-tourney avg.
