Defense greatly improved or just reflection of competition?

We won’t know exactly what we have until the Florida game. The biggest bright spot is we did what we were supposed to do and smacked the hell out of ETSU.
Another highspot is two weeks to prep for the Gators. I'm pretty confident what gameplan would challenge the Gators will defeat the UTEP Miners.

They are the worst team in the BCS. They might score 13 but they will not win. As I’m sure CJP is not taking any team lightly and that’s all that matters. I can take them lightly all I want and it doesn’t mean squat to the outcome
If the game

300 Spartans and about 600 allies beat the sheep out of the Persians until betrayed by a Grecian. From time to time, the impossible happens. A laughed at Vols team dis-"gusted" some Hurricanes in 1986. An outnumbered, surrounded, fatigued, and supplies short 101st Airborne Division, spit in the face of an overwhelming enemy and made it count. An outmanned Memphis team kicked a talent leaden Vols team in the nads, robbed them of a possible BCS berth and sent thme home groaning. That's just a few examples of how the so-called impossible can't happen. I too believe we will win and win big. But I'm wise enough to know we could shockingly fall short, it being it has happened before to both us and others. Therefore, our Vols should come out like a pack of rabid dogs, playing as if this UTEP team were the Swamp Lizards. I want the Vols scoring to the point the referees are forced to invoke the mercy rule by the 2nd quarter despite our third stringers or walk-on practice squad playing by that time. Yet, it is possible for "sheat" to happen despite what you say.

I saw improvements in the secondary, young players getting experience, and good effort. I know it’s an inferior opponent but they took care of business. A little bit of confidence goes a long way especially with the younger guys.

I wouldn’t want to put any promises in in terms of improvement. We still had at least 3 plays where we got beat deep, but they didn’t have the QB talent to capitalize.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong. Its been stated as fact that there were no improvements, it just seemed that way because of the vastly inferior opponent. We suck and gonna suck until told differently, which may not happen for 3-5 years, if ever.

The lack of DL pressure is definitely an issue. That being said I wouldn't look at the # of sacks as any inclination yet. UGA only has 1 sack on the year. We know their defense is legit. They had 0 against Austin Peay

That’s what really knotted my knickers.
I was screaming at our oline to please just fall on someone or push them or hold them. Damn.

Not all of the 1st QT. Play was on the OL the RB's had a hand in it too. Also our WR's could block better.

Yes, the defense played better. The main thing I noticed was they were wrapping up better.

I think I saw where Bama only had one sack last week. I'm pretty sure they played a cupcake too.

I rewatched the ETSU game last night. Maybe I was slightly too critical on the DL previously. The 1's actually looked decent. For all the crap he gets for his lack of production Kongobo had a pretty solid game. Baylen Buchanan is struggling though. Even with ETSU he was making the wrong read/cut.

Competition..

defense looks like 2017 defense. soft, few playmakers from returning players, few TFL, FEW TAKEAWAYS, FEW INTERCEPTIONS....

I think it was both and suspect defense will look good today as well. My hope is that our defense is on a level with Kentucky think we win if Florida can only score 16.

The defense cleaned some errors from week 1, but make no mistake the lower level competition helps. In years past these low level teams still moved the ball, scored, and kept the game close most of the game - so shutting them out for the most part is a huge improvement over past years. I think the coaches will continue to teach and the defense will continue all year as the younger players get more experience.

Offense on the other hand has not improved. We barely move the ball or score TD’s despite the lower level competition. Last week against ETSU, we didn’t really start clicking until Chryst came in (thank the defense and special teams for 21 pts to give us a cushion. I’m not as confident in the offensive coaches getting things turned around (a lot of that is because of lack of beef and talent on the O-Line. Kiffin was able to coach around that for most part, but I don’t see the results from our current guys. I’d be happy for them to prove me wrong
